question for you civic know it allers.......

previous gen civics, most particularly the 6thgen. ive always believed that ex's always have the vtec. i know its economic vtec crap but its still vtec. however my friend was on a 6thgen hunt and came across like 4-5 ex's w/out vtec. i said it probably just didnt say vtec on the valve cover those years but then i saw pics where it does.

was vtec an option 96-00 or can you explain this to me? cus im stumped since he only looked at like 6 ex's and almost all didnt say vtec. he even ran a couple vins and it came back saying civic ex. thanks for the help.

the 96-00 ex's all came with vtec...the valve cover just doesnt say it...it is only an option which is on the ex models/si...the ones that do say it are the 98-00 model civics say vtec and the 99-01 civic SI coupes have a DOHC VTEC on them

Sort of off topic... But I bought my 03 civic sport, and the HONDA dealer told me it had the 1.7l vtec in it... when we pop my friends hood (cdn) 03 si...his valve cover looks identical to mine..in fact they're identical under the hood...

the very first poster answered the question........

until the 7th gen, the sohc civics didn't have vtec on the valve cover, even if they had vtec. if you had an ex. it had vtec.

Ok...here we go. Honda first introduced vtec into the states in 1993. All ex and hx civics have vtec in them. With the hx, it is the vtec-e lean burn. The valve covers were an optino and not standard. To check if there is vtec... look just above the valve cover by the distributer. If there is a little pice that comes up that looks like the bottom of a cup of some sort than there is vtec. If you can crank the car when you look at it, then rev it up and when you pass 5500 rpms and here a whinning in the engine then there is vtec. If you want more specific info on civics then email me cause there is almost nothing that i dont know about hondas.

kinda off topic...but the 03 civic sport (CDN) does not have the vtec engine. They introduced the vtec engine in the 04+ si(CDN)/ex(US). So basically 04s in canada started the ex of the sedan.

incorrect.

the first VTEC honda car in the US was the NSX in 1991. and then the 1992 GSR integra (i think it was a hatchback) had VTEC in the D17A1 1.7 liter engine.

its wasnt a d17a1...lol s2kman...it was a b18 in the integra...also the 1992 civic vx hatch back had an early version of vtec which which was kicked in at 2200 rpms or something low like that...around 2k rpms is where it kicked in

"The Integra was second for the VTEC engine treatment. The first North American model to get it was the exotic NSX in 1991. This new engine, the B17A, displaced 1.7 litres and produced 160 hp at 7,500 rpm."
