block gaurds are to reinforce the cylinder walls. no advantage unless you're doing something that increases the forces of side-loading on your walls.

i can understand why you would ask. i got a haynes repair manual and it said the d17a6 was the vtec 127 hp. but i looked at my engine and it said a2. i was confused so i looked it up online. it was a misprint on their part. agreed ex motor.
