double clutching isnt needed for cars with syncros, go with heal and toe for racing and cornering and rev matching for around town. They are gonna yell at you for not searching this before posting

I don't know what it is either, but I just did a search in current and archived messages.. no matches in any of the forums. Is it for shifting without the clutch or is it matching the revs to the gear that you're about to engage so that you don't tear up your clutch as much? And what is a synchro? Why isn't double clutching needed? I've tried to find out what double clutching is and it sounds weird. I've heard (not from a reliable source) that it's pushing the clutch in just enough to get it out of gear, letting off the clutch when in neutral, and then pushing the clutch just enough to put it into gear again.. something that is complicated and has to be done fast.. Not sure why and how it helps, but it supposedly does.

First of all, you people have to sto watching that movie.

Second, double-clutching doesn't help unless you have a car without synchros where you would have to get the next gear in perfectly timed. Synchros help with the synchronization fo gears so that you don't have to double clutch and so that the gears are aligned properly.

I think they threw that line in there to make them sound smart cuz apparantly most ppl don't know what double-clutching is or that it will more than likely slow you down.

my guess is that Dom said that kinda sarchastically to Brian... "granny shifting, not double-clutching like you should" i think it was supposed to mean something basically like "be gentle on your car, granny shift and double clutch it so it stay's precious" like cause he lost, Dom was implying that's how he drove... hmmm, haha, that's just the movie critic side of me tho, haha

so is anyone here gonna answer the question at hand? rev matching is touching the gas when you downshift to match engine speed with wheel speed. this saves some wear and tear on your clutch, and is a prerequisite skill for heel-toe braking. heel-toe braking is a racing maneuver where you brake while downshifting, using your toe to brake and your heel to rev match the downshift. hope that helps. now, i have no idea what double clutching is, so if someone could answer that it would be much appreciated.

I MAY not have this completely right, so if somebody wants to fix me, go right on ahead... Double clutching is kinda the same idea as AFlyer was describing... the idea is to rev up when you downshift so help save your syncromesh... Take for instance, you're doin 75mph and you downshift to second, sure your syncro will do the job and shoot up the revs, but do you thing it's doing any good for your tranny?? course not (not that anyone would be stupid enough to downshift to 2nd at 75) anyways... double clutching is when you do this process to downshift...

1)Clutch
2)Shift to neutral
3)Rev to what you think the RPM of the gear you're downshifting to will be
4)Clutch
5)Shift to that gear

so basically, you're taking a lot of the effort off of the syncromesh when you do it that way... now whether or not it's worth the pain in the ***, i can't tell ya that, but well, that's my understanding of Double Clutching... hope that kinda helps u understand

The previous 2 replies were right on the money. The only time I can see the advantage to double clutching tho is when you are driving a truck with a balky tranny. I shook my head and thought fand f lost a lot of credibility with the double clutch reference
A good heel and toe downshift or 2 or 3 when decelerating and braking can be very satisfying!

Our cars got syncros sooo ... doesn't help
but anyways, i was looking at www.howstuffworks.com and they have good demonstrations about the clutch and manual transmission, it explains double clutching as well... if you can find it.

If you rev-match correctly, the transition from higher to lower gear (lower to higher RPMs) will be smooth. A good downshift will be heard, and not felt.
