FC, FF, FR what are they?

I have been reading some japanese car mags.

They refer terms such as FF, FC, FR...I know in the US we use FWD for forward wheel drive.

So, what do they mean? what are those terms?

Xenin is an unknown quantity at this point
FF=Front engine Front wheel drive (civic)
FR=Front engine Rear wheel drive (S2000)
RR=Rear engine Rear wheel drive (NSX)

not sure what the AWD cars are called but there are front engine and rear engine AWD cars out there.

i believe the NSX is a MR (mid engine, rear drive)

cars with 4-wheel drive or all-wheel-drive (AWD) are called; "4WD"

here's an FC

NSX has the engine firmly planted in the rear. Look at how big the back of the car is compared to the front, does a sports car really need a trunk that big? Heh, even hood clearance is obviously not enough to accomodate a sizable engine, no, its rear engined.

Mid engined cars are where its at, IMHO, good balance. I've always liked the assymetric hood scoop on the FC RX-7s

the NSX is a MR by classification. it is mounted right behind the seats under the hatch/rear window.

Oh, okay, my bad, I thought you meant to say that the engine was in front of the driver as opposed to behind Pardonez moi.

The distinction of mid-engine and rear-engine depends mainly on whether the engine is in front of or behind the rear axle.

NSX is an MR, if you want an example of a RR aka rear-engine rear-wheel drive, a good example is a Porsche, they have quite a few models 911 for example.

Excellent point, except for the fact that if you read up on the RX-8 you'd see that almost the entire bulk of the engine, and almost all of it's weight, lies behind the front axles... which would technically make it an MR car.

Rx8 and mabie FD rx7 (49/51 right?) are sometimes called midship FR in that the engine is behind the front axel, sorta like MR but backwards lol.

yes, well, the full chassis name is FC-3S. I guess you can figure it as a nickname.

a bit off topic, but arent well balanced cars, FR cars (not all)? I thought most MR and RR cars are rearward biased.

im pretty sure that the nsx is mid-engine although i could be wrong, if it is even a fraction of an inch in front ot the rear axle it is mid.
