Most people don't deserve a car
Okay this is different from most people need to learn how to drive, which is also true. Get ready for a huge rant. I can't believe how stupid people can be when it comes to cars. Male female I don't care they're all the same. I willing to bet a majority of drivers don't even know what oil is. They don't care about their car, whether it's a piece of junk or a high end luxury car. They never check the tire pressure, even simple things, they let the washer fluid run down to empty and wonder why the pump stopped working, they don't even understand what tire balance or alignment is, I'm willing to bet that the average person maybe knows how to take the car to a random shop to get the oil changed whenever they remember. The there are the cars around here who I have NO IDEA how they ever pass smog tests. There is no way. Everytime I go out on the road cars are cars all over with problems, either too old or broken cat, or some other thing wrong and the driver could care less. I seriously think smog checks aren't required here in Illinois. I mean driving home today I got behind this car and I couldn't breathe. I felt lite headed like I was about to pass out. And it's always like this. It's just so frustrating and rediculous, people don't know or forgot what traffic signals are like blinking yellow apparently means stop to alot of people, or stop signs don't mean anything. I mean come on. I HATE driving with other cars on the road. It's just soo annoying and I come home feeling like I am right now very angry and pissed off, when I should be happy because driving my civic puts me in a good mood. I guess I should try and wait til late at night 10pm? when all the stupid college kids got to bed or goto the bars. Makes me sick stupid idiots!
well this is will be a long thread i'm assuming. my 2 cents:
Just because people don't know or care enough about their cars doesn't mean they shouldn't be allowed to drive. Yes many people on the road are dumb, but they don't care about it, and you shouldn't either. Part of being in a society is conforming, even if it means to bad drivers around you. Cheer up

i feel with gearbox. though i dont think they should be banned from the streets, i think they all need to get smacked on the back of the head and get with it and take care of their vehicles.
now yall know how i feel working at autozone. i deal with it on a daily basis.
yea, automotive supidity should be painful.

omg don't even get me started with cell phones. That's how I got smashed into cause someone thought it was more important to reach for a phone than watch the road. Oh yea and over here people try and merge on the freeway going 35-40mph. Sheesh. I can easily keep up with traffic shifting under 3k in a civic lol.

I learned to live with those feelings and facts.... in live in NYC, where most ppl only know P and D and start car (which they hold it on start for too long and the grinding noise comes on). Even among my good friends, many dont know what the hell is going on.

well, living in california, where i think (im not sure on this) thatwe have one of the highest standards for smog tests, and i STILL see chimneys driving around. we should adopt some of the german policies for our cars. how many beaters do you see in europe driving around (from videos, news, other what-not)? your answer would probably be 'NOT A WHOLE LOT'. I know in Germany, you HAVE to have your car repaired almost immediately, so you don't have parts falling off all over the place.

I agree with gearbox too. But I have realized a long time ago that *most* of the drivers around me seem to be ciminally stupid. I sometimes wonder how they managed to live this long. And then the reaction time in minutes that some folks have when the light turns green....sheesh.
But no, we don't want german standards here. You can FORGET any modifications to your cars. You need permission just to change your rims.
Thank you, no.

although i agree with you on most of that, and that its pathetic how people dont know jack about their cars, i will play the devils advocate and say just this one thing: takumi. lol you dont need to know a whole lot about cars to love to drive, or be able to drive well. sure, later on he began learning and loving his car, but thats only because he started hanging out w/ people who got him into it. majority of drivers dont have access to those kinds of people, but they might still just love to drive and be really good drivers.
Socal has some of the WORST drivers EVER! Even though I haven't driven out of state, I would be willing to bet that a lot of the crappiest drivers are here. Not to mention some of the rudest. Especially through certain areas. Some areas have an extremely high concentration of Asian immigrants. I don't have anything against Asian immigrants, my parents are Asian immigrants, but I have problems with Asian immigrants that don't have driver's licenses, don't have car insurance, and drive like there's no such thing as traffic laws. It would take hours and hours to describe all of the problem people, but seriously, something should be done. It's getting ridiculous.
Here are some things I find annoying to add to all your lists:
People who cut in front of me to get around a slow car only to go slow themselves; I've realized there are people who simply cannot have a car infront of them and somehow think they are making better time by doing so.
People in front of me who brake because someone 2 lanes over is braking.
People who try/want to pass me (and I usually let them), but then decide they are comfortable hovering in my blind spot.
People going 95 when they see open road, but then slow down to 55 around curves, no matter how gentle it is.
People driving with their emergency flashers on, but going the speed limit.

Well I have ways of dealing with my frustration. Strobes are almost installed, and I still have hi beam for my HID which is nice and blinding.
Horn is still a classic tho especially when people think they have the right of way cutting OVER solid parking spot lines when I'm driving on the actual road way.

i hate people driving with the turn signal on after they change the lane or make a turn... i don't know if they want to do more "maneuvring" or what
btw, recently i feel indian people drive worst than asian.. although i have nothing against both ethics... somehow they just make u-turn whenever they like to... asian people just drive slow...
EDIT: I'm an Asian myself..

I think that improved driver education and harder restrictions on keeping driver permits should be enforced. I aced driver education by sleeping through class. Anyone can do it.
I would happily vote for ride-along road tests every 2 years, and it would be included in the vehicle inspection. Noise levels should be redefined (to allow aftermarket with some sort of CARB sticker) and tested, in addition to emissions.
And for God's sake... TEST MOTORCYCLES FOR NOISE LIMITS. Harleys, in addition to stuttering and sounding stupid for their crazy rotational crankshaft timing, are too flippin loud. They can run open pipes, and I can't? That's F'ed up.
Old farts need to have their vision tested regularly, cellphones banned from drivers, and TEENAGERS SHOULD NOT HAVE FRIENDS IN THE CAR until they're 18. (( <18 year old drivers have a 140% increased chance of accidents if they have friends in the car. ))
People need to have respect for cars. They're 3,000 pound weapons.

Damn, there goes my rides. I've been catching rides to and from work since I got into an accident. I guess us idiots don't know how to drive responsibly.
I didn't expect everyone to agree with my "no friends <18" statement. Yes, it's a little harsh, but there are also other factors to consider.
If the kid has a personal stake in the car, rather than just being handed to them, they tend to be careful with it.
The 4.0 GPA cheerleader whose dad bought her a brand new Accord on her 16th birthday is going to total that sucker within the year, if she doesn't destroy it by forgetting to change the oil or keep up with other basic maintenance.
But the highschool dropout who has to work 2 jobs to afford his Accord is going to not only keep it for 100,000 miles, but be sure it runs just as good as it did with 100 miles on the clock. He's also less likely to be careless when driving, because that's all he can afford.
