If the kid has a personal stake in the car, rather than just being handed to them, they tend to be careful with it.

The 4.0 GPA cheerleader whose dad bought her a brand new Accord on her 16th birthday is going to total that sucker within the year, if she doesn't destroy it by forgetting to change the oil or keep up with other basic maintenance.

But the highschool dropout who has to work 2 jobs to afford his Accord is going to not only keep it for 100,000 miles, but be sure it runs just as good as it did with 100 miles on the clock. He's also less likely to be careless when driving, because that's all he can afford.
Im 17 and my dad gave me the civic for my 16th B-day and I havent gotten in one wreck. I also havent gotten a ticket (knock on wood) Your statement about not having friends in the car until 18 is too general. Any of my friends will say that they would ride with me because even though I drive fast they feel safe in my car, because of the way I drive.

I agree on most of that... We don't even have a smog inspection test or anything in Georgia... It is pathetic.

Obviously, since you're a member of an online forum, you probably care about your civic more than the average person.

Therefore, it's reasonable to state that you have a stake in the car, and following, you won't be driving like a maniac.

Stay safe.

You're 17. EVERYONE on this forum thought they were at the peak of their driving capability when they were 17. I know I did. While I have no tickets or accidents from age 16 to now (22), you definitely learn more about how to REALLY drive over time. Save what you wrote up there, and re-read it when you're 23, and I bet you'll feel the same way.

BTW - based on my childhood experiences, the world would be a safer place if no one under 18 had passengers under 21.

Ok but the whole no passengers(under 25) until your 18 still wouldnt work because your not supposed to drive with people(under 25) for 6 months or something after you get your license, and kids still do, so basically that wouldnt solve anything except for cops hassling us younger drivers more... It is true though that a lot of people who are young don't know **** about how to drive, hence the fact that one of my friends got in 3 accidents with her permit!

seriously is that bad for the washer fluid pump? in the canadian civics they have a light so i always just wait for the light. as for the shitty poluting cars i hear ya but i thought if you set the ricirculation button on, it kills outside air which means you can breath again.

People going 95 when they see open road, but then slow down to 55 around curves, no matter how gentle it is.
i hate that

yea im 17 too
i used to think i knew how to drive well, or well enough
but everyday i always learn something new
i didnt learn to slow down in the rain til i saw a 5 series flip behind me on the freeway. theres other things too.
but so far no accidents and tickets since 16.
haahah only one year but my parents are surprised

today on my break i saw a guy that SHOULD NOT be driving. It was an older guy. He was hobbling out of Rite-Aid, carrying his bag of whatever. For some reason, something in his bag set of the alarm. HE DIDN"T EVEN FLINCH! He kept hobbling on over to his car, got in, pressed his face up against the windshield, and drove off. Can't hear, can't see. Shouldn't drive.

Part of the reason ppl drive their cars into the ground and abuse them is because they don't have to have their TV tuned up, or change the oil in their microwave. Most machines that the typical moron uses in her daily life don't require regular maintenance.

However, on the other hand, if all of the drivers were like us, then a lot less people would be employed in the auto biz. Less dealers, less pepboys drones, less ricers, ... wait ... maybe that's not such a good thing.

that is so true...i think most teenagers (15-19) have that 2 fast 2 furious instinct and go 20 miles past the speed limit on the freeway but like most of you said, driving is a maturitiy (spelling?) process...its like teens think theyre racing everyone around them while they're putting in their new blink182 cd while answering their cell phone and at the same time taking a bite out of their burrito

also a little off the subject but in austrailia i believe they have some kind of mandatory car check every 2(?) years that covers everything from mechanical to safety features to the exterior condition of your car...so basically if you're driving a rusted down **** bucket in sydney you're gonna have to get it fixed or buy a new car

Oh yea I forgot to mention how many cars I see with only one headlight or NO headlights because they're burnt out and the owner is too lazy and cheap to buy a $10 bulb and install it in 5 minutes.

I i hate when people are in the turn merge lane, and the people are turning into the lane like this..| | |_ (people turning into street)
| _ -------------------
| | | (you turning into the street)
and there are two lanes.. and the the person in the merging lane sits there and waits for the people who are turning on the street to stop when they could just go in their lane. I also hate when your merging onto a two lane street and everyone is in the right lane and no one is in the left, preventing you from merging!
