Brand New Civic...Fuel efficiency?
Brand New Civic...Fuel efficiency?
Hey guys,
Got me a brand new 05 about a month ago. I have been tracking the fuel efficiency on it every time I fill up and my results are not making me happy. It seems to be averaging about 25-30 mpg when I expected to be getting somewhere between 32 and 38 mpg on an average. In some cases it has been particularly bad (20 mpg average) and in one case on a longer highway only trip it averaged 55 mpg (incredible, I wish it would get that all the time) But in general, when I am just driving back and fourth to work (some highway, some city) and around town driving it gets 25-30, what gives?
Granted, it's only got 1,800 miles on it, so it could be that the engine is still breaking in. but it doesn't really appear to be getting better over time, it's staying in the same range. I bought this car to get mileage in the thirties. Whats the deal guys?

Hey pr0vidence, where are you located? If you have 1800 miles on the car, wonder if the cold weather is having an effect on your milage. I know that my milage goes down the tubes in winter, I would say I lose almost 80km per tank depending how hard I drive my car...

i had a 2001 and in the 4 years of driving it ive never gone over 32mpg. suck it up, it was all a marketing ploy to get you to cough up the $$. those tests are not normal driving conditions.

depends on the gas you put in there, and how you drive it... i get roughly 30mpg doing a LOT of spirited driving.. spirited meaning i drive hard most of the time and relax it some of the time
dude wait till your car hits about 30,000 miles then it will freakin start giving you good gas mileage. I used to get about 280 miles per tank, then now after over 100,000 miles on the car ive been getting like 33-35 miles per gallon... hang on. BTW mine is a 5 speed and i dont shift under 4 in any gear so you'll get there.
man, you all are looking at the wrong thing. Do not look at milage when you drive. Look at the RPM's. Red line Red line. That's all I see. I mean if I'm driving light and not hitting Red Line when I shift, I at least hit 4 thousand everytime I shift. If you wanted good gas milage you should have got the hybrid. The Insight, Cuvic or new Accord. Sorry for being so blunt, but come'on.
Thanks for getting back to me, I got a brand new Civic EX manual shift (the only way to go) I drive it very lightly, shift at like 3k-3.5k don't put the pedal to the floor, that sort of stuff. I'll be a bit rougher on it after a put a few miles on it, I find it hard to beat up a brand new car. I used to own a 2000 Prelude so I can wind it out a bit no problem. Also, I live in Connecticut where it's anywhere between 0 and 30 degrees all day these days, so yeah maybe the cold weather is doing something.
Like I said it did manage 55 mpg on one highway only trip. I wish I could get it to sip like that all the time.
And dude, there are reasons besides better fuel efficiency that I got a gas car instead of a hybrid. All I am saying is I expected to get in the thirties with this car and I'm getting in the high twnties, better than my Prelude, but I expected more, that's all. I was just wondering what everyone else's experience has been with their civics.

crap, that sucks man. i average around 29-32mpg per tank on my modded b18c civic 5 speed. thats with screwing around on the freeways everyonce in a while..... the worse i got was 22mpg, when i first did the swap.. happy foot=heavy foot my best was li think 34per gallon... not bad i think for a car that ran mid 14's...
LOL! You guys crack me up... Seriously... Oh no! Only 25-30 MPG! LOL I have an auto, and I still drive the crap out of it. I drive it like a friggin' race car, haha. The thing STILL gets 24 MPG. It's an 01 EX Coupe, and it's got like... 35k miles on it. Gotta love my little 'Vic. It may not be the fastest car out there, but I've beat on it more than any of the other cars I've had the privelege of owning and it still runs, lol.

and yes it's most likely weather affecting your mpg. i am lucky to get anything over 25mpg in this winter crap. but in summer i'll hit as much as 32mpg if i do a lot of freeway driving.

I drive about 300 to 320 miles a week, with about 20 miles of it being in the city. When I fill up, it takes about 8.5 gallons on average. If I take 310 miles and divide that by 8.5 gallons it equates to 36.5 MPG. This is on my completely stock(other then suspension) 2002 EX 5-Spd with smaller wheels(205/40/17) that has 32K miles on it. I always let it warm up until the needle is on top of the C in the temp guage, then drive slow(under 3K rpms per shift) until it warms up to normal operating temp. Then, I rarely shift past 3,500 rpms. Yeah I know, I drive like a granny but if you know how to shift you can keep up with everyone without having to peg the throttle all the time. When I'm on the highway, I drive anywhere from 70 to 80mph and try to keep it my foot steady. Basically I baby the throttle. FWIW...

anyways, I average 350 miles per fill-up ($25 76 premium gas). Thats if I go through the reserve which I hardly do.
With nitrous I get at least 300 miles per fill-up.
I dont know why you guys are getting low miles. I have 60k mileage on my 01 ex.

low mileage here too compared to warmer conditions but then again it's been less than 0 degrees a couple days here and it barely gets out of the teens most of the rest of the days lately. gotta check how many miles per gallon i'm still getting but it seems to really gulp the gas now. just filled it up a few days ago and it's already more than half gone when before it would be only a quarter gone or something. still though civic has one of the best mileages for a car its size so i can't really complain especially compared to the old Buick Regal "boat" i used to drive.
Our `04 didnt get that good of mileage untill we had over 5,000 miles on her. Which didnt take too long, she gets 38 on the highway in the summer with the a/c on. 5-speed btw, and her drivng, not me
