I was driving with my friend friday night, he has a celica gts, and we were racing this eclipse gts, and he was shifting 3rd to 4th shifting at 8400rpm, and he missed 4th and blew his motor, i feel so bad, hopefully his warranty will cover it, at least we won the race

sometimes dealers wont cover an engine being blown up from poor mistakes and abuse.

I hope his warranty doesn't cover it. It'd only drive up the cost of Toyotas for people who know how to drive them.

yeah he blew it by shifting into 2nd instead of 4th. probably bent some valves, valve train damage, who knows what else he did to the head of the engine.

and by the way, it is doubtful the dealership will cover it. number one, because it's going to be considered abuse due to the fact that he was going at such a fast speed from 3rd into 4th (im sure he was well above any legal speed limit in your state going into 4th gear) and most dealerships will not cover a "mis-shift". second, many cars now adays have a "little black box" that records information about speed, movement, etc. this may end up telling the dealership just how fast he was going when he mis-shifted.

make sure he doesnt goto the dealer and say he mis-shifted... tell them you was driving normal and heard a "noise" etc etc. bs your way thru to have it repaired under warranty. hope your friend learns a lesson and doesnt even know how to do basic shifting when racing. he or she shouldnt be racing if he cant shift gears right

the dealership will be able to tell what he did, whether he says it or not. trust me, he's screwed.

he said he beat a gt-s and type-s with his civic with intake. he said with his driving skills he could probably take an S2000 as well.

whats funny is if his gts/type-s race story was true, he traded in his civic for a "slower" gts. lol

Tell your friend to unplug his battery ASAP to reset the ECU cuz the dealer will check what the last RPM output range was and man when they see 9000RPM or whatever it was ..it must of been high they will not warranty the engine at all....

DO IT QUICK UNPLUG THE BATTERY TO RESET THE ECU..
Its worth a try

I don't know about that. My buddy has an 01 GTS and did the same thing. But I think it was from 5th to 3rd. He took it to the dealership and they supposedly fixed the motor under warranty for him. He was saying something about the motor being so trashed, that the dealership had to order him a new motor from Japan? I dunno about that part. He said he bent like 12 vavles or something on it pretty nasty.

Worst thing you can do is take it to the dealership and see if they'll fix it under warranty. Worst thing then can do is tell you no.

wow i guess celicas suck i dunno about if your story is real because thats what the rev limiter is there for, or unless ur friend was a really stupid driver that dint felt the car revving lice crazy and slowing him down when we shifted into second, and he just didnt push the clutch soon enough after he realized what has happened. also even of you dont tell a thing to the dealership when they open the engine by the damage they will see that the engine went way above the redline and that it was a misshift because thats the only case where you can rev the engine above redline overpassing the revlimiter (the gearbox is pushing the engine ) so guarrantee will not cover it thats abuse ur friend is owned. he can get a new engine from like 1000 on ebay

I might be to late with my post but you have to reset the computer in the car because a car has a memory to it and they will bring up everything that happened to the car as it blew up. You need to take the positive terminal off your battery and ground it out. Hold the positive terminal against somthing metal (frame of the car). What this does is drains the capacitors in the computer that stores memory. A capacitor stores energy from the car battery thus giving the computer power to remember what happened in the last seconds of the cars life. You need to ground it out completely so that the cars memory is juiced out. I know this works because i rallied my rental car and blew the engine. my mechanic buddy said a car is like an airplane with a black box and if they wanted to they could call up the computers memory and make me pay.. just juice the capacitors and youll get a new motor.. theyll prolly have the car for a month to do all the work but they wont be able to find ****... have fun.. be safe

ok a misshift is just one slipup, it can happen anytime do u think he planned on it, u have ever driven a gts bfore either, if u did u would kno that the gates r very very close and the 2000 2001 models are very prone to it it has happened to many people with celicas. Still it happened so fast and out of nowhere im still in shock

we pulled the negative terminal, we read that that would reset the ECU.

the rev limiter merely cuts fuel, causing your car's redline to stop where it is basically.

however, if you mis shift, you rev limiter will NOT prevent you from putting into the wrong gear, and your rpms jumping to 12,000 or whatevr it would be.
