just reading more on the car black box. dont know if celicas have them or not. what it does is this:
it records the following information for 5 seconds before, and during, an 'event':
# Vehicle speed (five seconds before event)
# Engine speed (five seconds before event)
# Brake status (five seconds before event)
# Throttle position (five seconds before event)
# State of driver's seat belt switch (On/Off)
# Passenger's airbag (On/Off)
# IR Warning Lamp status (On/Off)
# Ignition cycle count at event time
# Ignition cycle count at investigation
# Maximum velocity for near-deployment event
# Velocity vs. time for frontal airbag deployment event
# Time from vehicle impact to time of maximum velocity
# Time between near-deploy and deploy event (if within five seconds)
an event is anything that causes airbag sensors to deploy airbags, or anything catastrophic happening to the engine, including a mis-shift that destroys the engine and prevents it from functioning.

beginners. Oh well I hope for your sake they replace it but either way you blew it. Most power train warranty won't cover abuse, and I'm sure they'll take the head off to see what happened.

The warranty is not there to cover stupidity or lack of driving skills.

Well toyota ordered my friend a new bottom end of the motor, they r gonna cover it under warranty. They did it no questions asked, but also his mechanic use to work for toyota and still is good friends with a lot of the general managers so i think that may of helped. Im just happy for him though

They changed the shift gates in the 2001 celica GTS (for this specific reason).
And they did lower the redline for a short period of time.
If your buddy's celica is a 2000 or 2001, he can claim that the shifter is messed up. I personally know 2 GTS people who had their stuff waranteed for misshifts. They even had it fully tuned with an apexi PowerFC. He simply put the stock computer back in and said "it went into 2nd when i tried to go into 4th". And Toyota replaced the motor and the shift gates on the tranny.
edit:
This wont work on 2002 and newer. They have the wider gates.

I will say this though, that's what he gets for street racing. Maybe next time he'll blow his whole car up.
