When the oil is cold it does not flow as easily as when it is warm. This means the oil may not be seeping into those tight spaces "as well". It will be adequately lubricated ,but not to the point where you want to mash the gas when you just started your car from -10 deg F. Also, a redline has little meaning outside of a single moment in time. The redline somewhat indicates the max your engine can handle in the form of stresses etc, but this does not mean you can cruise around at redline all day and suffer no ill effects. Time is a very important factor when considering RPMs and engine wear. This is when factors such as creep come into play, and thus causing parts to fail. As an added tidbit, I believe BMW M3's electronically limit your revs when the engine is cold so that you do not cause any damage. Kinda cool. As for the civic, again, if you have good oil and your not cruising around town at 5k, then push her. She likes it when you play rough....

i agree with cdmx. he said it's driveable from a cold start, which is perfectly true. in fact, most hondas usually won't engage the hi-cam profile on vtec until the engine is warmed up.
if i mash the gas on my car after a cold start, a 6000rpm rev limiter cuts in on the fun.

Manufacturers normally set the redlines lower than the engine's actual breaking point in order to prevent you from popping your engine. You also have a rev limiter and fuel cut to baby sit you if you can't understand the point of redline. Of course hard running is harder on the engine, but it certainly isn't going to pop it right away....occasional jaunts are fine....just don't treat your car like a 2 buck ***** and you're good.

great posts guys. im in the same situation as the creator of the thread. been drivin pretty harsh on my 04 a/t sedan. felt kindah bad, n had a fear that i probably REALLY shouldnt be doin that to it. everyones post helped inform me alot. ty
as for the engine being louder... wen my friend pushes down slowly on the accelerator n lets go, while i stand behind the car. i hear this low deep sounding sound. it wasnt like that before. ive got like 6k miles on it, n daily drive it. maybe hit 6000rpm a few times a day. (not good). is there nething wrong? or is it supposed to be like that.
