nobody is "dethroned"... practically every company has their own variable valve timing mechanism. VTEC and VVTL-i are nice, but then nobody ever talks about Ferrari's variable valve timing, or M3 and M5 VANOS system.

and toyota's VVTL-i didn't "dethrone" it. Last time I checked, the S2000 was still the only 4 cylinder making 120hp/liter n/a. 240hp out of 2.0 liters? And toyota has 180hp out of 1.8 liters? Sorry. you lose.
yes vtec-e = less performance more MPG
i personally think vtec is better than any other system out there the other ones are more computer controlled ex: vanos
plus honda was the first to come out with the idea back in 1990
now a days almost every brand has it's own type of timing management

"VTEC only works in high RPMs, therefore a VTEC car is just like a non-VTEC car at low RPMs. And since most people drive at low RPMs most of the time, VTEC is a waste of money."
I don't know about you guys, but I got my VTEC because it came with a sunroof and shiny wheels.

there is no way you are going to compare 2 almost identical technologies off of one application out of hundreds.
S200 has higher hp/liter. so what if toyota wanted that crown they will make a 240hp 1.8 L.
vtec is NOT the only thing that determines hp.

once again vtec is not the only factor that contributes to horspower. dont say because one engine with vtec has one better stat than another engine with vvtl-i that vtec is better.

Variable valve timing has been used for longer than the 90's. I even remember reading about a steam train that used it as well. Patens for variable valve timing have been around since the 60's.
