12,000 worth it?

Hey guys, so my girl is STILL looking for a car. We've have been searching and searching but have found nothing! I was checkin the paper today and I found a 2000 VW Jetta VR6 for 12,800. I know a lot of you guys say stay away from Vdub but she really wants to get a car soon and she doesn't really mind them. what do you guys think of the price? I was going to offer them 12,000

also - since a lot of you guys don't like Vdub - whats your major gripe about them? do they breakdown a lot? expensive parts? crappy mpg? I know i've heard that the seats are a bit uncomfortable - but besides that...what are some common problems they seem to have. i wanna know what else could potentially be a problem with them

btw i have searched and read reviews about them - but who knows who wrote those reviews - so i'm asking the only people on the net who i don't know that i trust so THANKS for the help!!!

Mainly a bad engine, and I wouldnt exactly say that they are bad. They just seem to start having problems at an early stage. To start seeing problems around 50,000 miles is not un-common. If I had 12,000 to spend I'd get a nice used reliable accord.

Vw are known to have electrical problems.. but this does not mean the are totally bad cars... they just have their issues. Early VR6's were also known to overheat quite easily (Big engine in a very small engine bay = not much room for a big radiator).

Personally my major gripe with VW is the primitive rear suspension they've been using since the 70's... Semi-independant Tortion beam. But you'd never notice any problems if the car is for daily driving.

I dunno, i always liked these cars... same with a Passat. I haven't heard anything particularily bad about them, and there are so many here in my city.

passats are much better built than jettas and generally are in the same price range except they may be 1-3 years older than that said jetta.

I'd say look into a passat.

my brother has one and its been a great car to him. Our only gripe is, its gas tank seems to be quite QUITE small. He usually has to fill up once or twice a week.

Get It I like em'

for the overheating issue that someone brought up you can get a thermostat from neuspeed that will kick the fan on sooner than stock to keep it cool.

My major gripe is the expensive. The parts, whenever something goes wrong, are very expensive. The engines are also larger than a Civic's so the gas mileage is worse.

Otherwise they are very sporty, and fairly comfy. I just don't like the high maintenance.

Too much, 3 or 4 guys at my work all swear by GTI's/Corrado, etc. They buy a 92 Jetta, tear it apart, rebuild it and move on. They love the maintenance (they do it themselves) they buy and trade the things like its nothing. I would say if you are not a hands on person, you are better off going with a more reliable make (read: Japanese). Just my .02 NONE of these guys would EVER touch a 96-up Jetta/GTI, and they know them inside and out.
