I must admit, I don't know what he's talking about with displacements n all, but he's wrong on many topics. I know he will bring this up in front of other co-workers when I come in. What can I say to make him STFU. Tell me if he's wrong or if I got owned.

Its been shown that a VTEC head flows a couple more CFMs than a non vtec head, and thats because the valves can open more allowing more air through.

However you still run into a problem, and that is that it still only has the displacement of 3 liters. The air is not exceeding atmospheric pressure, which is the only way to have displace more air than the cylinder can normally hold.

See a 2 liter engine in theory should flow 2 liters, but thats not the cause. We run into something called volumetric efficiency. Which is 85% i believe. So in reality a 2 liter motor is only flowing 1.7 liters of air due to volumetric efficiency. A VTEC head simply raises volumetric efficiency. It gets closer to 100% but never reaches 100%. so, and im just making these numbers up. But maybe a 2.0 liter VTEC motor has 92% volumetric efficiency, so its flowing 1.84 liters. Even of you could attain 100% volumetric efficiency you would still only be flowing 2 liters of air.

However if you turbocharge a motor its possible for a 2 liter motor to flow 4 liters of air. Thus its displacing the same amount of air as a larger displacement motor.

BTW don't ***** with mechanical enginnering majors, we put electrical engineers in there place (tell him I said that)

As far as the cars go, in which one is quicker, thats easy. The GS430. The GS430 puts out more torque and more horsepower than the new RL.

The new RL is a heavyweight compared to the GS, by 269 lbs. The RL has 3.5L versus the GS with the 4.3. Equivalent horsepower ratings at 300hp. GS owns in torque with 65lbs.

As for what you can tell him to make him shut up

1) Ask him to define displacement ratios, no matter what he says, hes wrong

2) Ask him if he's aware of volumetric effeicency? which is why VTEC exists, its to make the motor more efficient.

3) Ask him how VTEC works, obviously if he thinks VTEC raises displacement then his answer should be quite entertaining

Yea I censored his name so no one would go killing him. Thanks guys. As I predicted, he did bring it up today saying how I was trying to "debate" yesterday. A co-worker that knew what he was talking about made him STFU. The guy mumbled something about an "inline v6" and we made fun of him saying there is no such thing.
