Just an odd parts question.

I could probably answer this with a Haynes book or something, but I don't have one. I was searching for a trunk leak today (no solution yet), and I went digging around behind the carpet in the trunk compartment on the driver's side. Behind there I saw a funky gated air vent deal and a clear plastic hose running up into the frame of the car.

What the hell is it? The best I could come up with using my staggering powers of deduction is that it's some kind of drainage hose, but for what? And why the vent? Someone on here knows.

Just curious.

I have a vent, but I dont believe that I have a hose running through mine if thats what your asking about? I think somebody said the vent is to relieve pressure when you shut the trunk. I havent seen a hose in my trunk. Are you the first owner?

2K1Civic17"Gabe, that sounds like a good explanation of the vent.

The hose runs from the piece of sheet metal just ahead of the vent up into the frame, and it's certainly empty (no fluid), so I'm assuming it's a drain of some kind, although I suppose it could just as easily be for air. If I knew where it went I could probably figure it out.

Ah, wait, I drive an EX. Could it have something to do with the sunroof?

I'm having my dealership check it out because I'm still under warranty (bought used from them). I think you could be right, a lot of the water was in that area. Someone else on here said it could also be the gasket around the fuel opening (the part that the gas cap screws onto).

I tried pouring a crapload of water over the closed fuel door and a ton of water definitely got inside, all over the gas cap, but nothing seemed to leak into the car. Perhaps I will look at the tail lights next.

BINGO! It is a drain tube for the sunroof. The seal around the sunroof is not water tight, any water that gets past the seal gets channeld to the drain tube and dropped out side the car. If yours is leaking then its either clogged or broken. The dealer should take care of you.

It isn't the tube that's leaking, I just wanted to know what it was! Now I do, thanks

I think it could be the tails, as someone else guessed in this thread. I tested the fuel cap area and didn't get any water to drip inside so I don't think that's it.

Follow-up on the trunk leak: SuperFrankie was 100% right, even though I have stock tails. My passenger side tail light seal was leaking HEAVILY from the top edge. After taking my light off I found that the seal was wrinkled, like the top had been folded over and mashed in when it was installed.

I flattened the seal and re-installed, but water still came gushing in when I tested it with the garden hose. So of course I had no choice but to get medieval on its ***! I took the seal off completely and ran a thick bead of outdoor silicone caulk along the contact point.

That should do the trick.

As for the hose... Turns out there's one on either side of the car. Seems like a pretty neat workaround for a non-watertight sunroof seal. Those Honda guys, what will they come up with next?!
