Double Clutching

Double clutching = Clutch in, Drop to nutural, Clutch out, Blip Gas(if you are down shifting), Clutch in Shift to next gear, Clutch out.
Double Clutch shifting Is not just for down shifts... you can double clutch while up shifting too, though it is much slower then normal shifting.
Traditionally Double clutching is use on cars that have Bad syncros or No syncors, because you are doing manually what the syncros do automatically for you normally. SO, if you have good working syncros then you are wasting your time double clutching, if you've blown your syncors or happen to be driving a Very old Truck or other car with No syncros then Have at it.

someone please tell me why youd rather downshift than use the brakes? the wear you prevent on your brakes probably doesn't add up to the gas you burn making your engine rev up to 5 or 6k rpm, right?

If your foots not on the gas, then the engine is getting just bairly enough gas to keep running.... If you had an Air/Fuel gauge, you'd see that the engine gos Extreamly Lean when you lift off the gas. So your not actually using much gas at all.

I was taught double clutching is for racing to get through the gears faster... like when you're racing and after you're in 2nd a little past half way to red-line, let the gas go and push the clutch in hard, blip gas (w/clutch in) the pop clutch out. The action on your foot would be like as if you are shifting to a higher gear...only you leave it in the same gear. I dunno if its the right way, or even good for the car, but if you are losing by a pinch in the beginning of the race you will definitely get a good jump on the other car.
^^ That is not double clutching. For the last time, double clutching is used only in tractor trailors nowadays, since there are no more passenger vehicles with unsyncronized trasmissions.
It is when you are in gear, you put the clutch in, move the gear shifter to neutral, take your foot off the clutch, push the clutch back in, and move the gear shifter into a gear.
BTW, what you just described would actually slow you down in a "race" because you are taking your foot off the gas long enough to give the other person a head start.

is that you in that pic? cuz if it is, you're right, about anything
but if its just some random hot girl, then listen - im not sure if what i described is actually called double clutching...but try it, it works - not sure why or how or anything like that...but when you do it, the motion is so fast that you don't give the person a "head start" what you do is raise your RPMS higher, faster. maybe its in my head, but then again, i've tested it, raced once normally, then again doing my technique, when i didn't use it i got beat by 1/4 car length, when i did i won by a hair

How bout we throw in power shifting into this topic lol. What Zzyzx said is right he described both double clutching at rev matching other ppl were getting them confused. Rev-matching also puts less stress on the tranny if done properly you can just slip into gear without even noticing the downshift except the extra power cuz your in higher rpm. So when do right you can't feel the clutch engage/disengage.
