Well...the wifey threw another curve ball at me saying she now wants a small SUV instead of another 4 door. So I've researched the best Fuel Efficient SUV's out there. Please vote and let me know which one you would choose and why. And please don't start throwing in other SUV's cause these are rated as having the best Fuel Economy.
Almost forgot...these are going to be used either 02's or 03's...
Thanks.

Subaru Forester 2.5X Had wrong model
Honda CR-V EX

I'd personally go with the Subaru Forester. I've driven RAV4s and CR-Vs, and I just didn't care for them. I also don't like Mitsu in general. The Forester gives her AWD. None of them are really power-monsters, and I don't think she'd care, so I'd just go with the one I trust the most. AWD = trust.

What ever you do, Make sure the Suv you buy is built on a Unibody chassis not a Full frame. (especially if you want your wife to be safe in a crash)

Id go with the Subaru
Personally if I were to get a small SUV I'd like it to be able to haul something without having to fold down the back seat everytime I went to the grocery. Just look at the CRV and the Mitsu, there can't be a whole lot of trunk space in there. It looks like theres about 1 foot of space between the back seat and the trunk door. Meaning those back seat will probably send most of there life folded down to free up some trunk space.
So now its between the RAV4 and the Subie.
I don't know about your area but around here there aren't too many Subaru dealerships. Thats really the only deciding factor I can think of.

My wife has a CRV and absolutely loves it. Then my mother bought one as well...good little car and we ahven't had anything go wrong with it so far (20k miles in a year). I want to find suspension parts for it and lower it a bit..but she doesn't want me messing with it
I would go with the Subaru Forester, The Honda CR-V and the Toyota Rav-4 have a narrow wheel base and are top heavy and can tip over very easily. I never liked anything from mitsubishi, read consumer reports on them. http://cars.about.com/cs/testdrives/fr/forester_tst.htm

I am not going to bother posting on the Honda, pretty much the same as a toyota rav 4,

Thanks for the input guys...keep em coming. Remember this car is going to be primarliy hers, so I really don't care if it's cute or not...cause I'm not driving it. And, we really don't need to haul anything...nor do we need a massive amount of space. We are primarily concerned about extra space (more than just a 4 door sedan), and fuel economy. We have pretty much narrowed it to 2, due to looks, fuel efficiency, and price. But like I said...keep em coming...I always like to hear peoples experiences...

The CR-V EX. But the Subaru Forester would be a very close second. The RAV4 is somewhat smaller and I'm not a fan of the Mitsubishi's at all. The CR-V has a proven reputation for build quality, reliability, and re-sale value.

lol I cannot be the only one who thinks that's funny. "Besides the fact that the car catches on fire, it's a very good car."
My wife said THE EXACT SAME THING a few months back, after testing all of them, and checking all the reliablilty ratings, resale value, etc. etc. we went with the Rav4, it is actually very nice to drive, and I am pretty big, 6'2" 200 pounds, and I even fit pretty comfortably in it.
I took it off roading(nothing extreme) and its actually quite nimble off road, very fun...

They bumped up the power for the RAV4 since it's redesign to compete w/ the CRV a lil more. I like the size however of the CRV and I know a bunch of people that love those things. Don't worry about the fire things... It seems to be more of a human error...
Since you're going for fuel-economy and space, I'd choose the CRV. The Subaru would be a nice performance suv though...
Ahhh last, the Mitsu, well, I don't know much about their small SUV's but their Pajero's (non-US) were great...

Anymore suggestions...c'mon people...you gotta help me out...I'm planning on doing this in about 1 to 2 weeks...
ok lets put it this way the Rav 4 and CRV have a high center of gravity, easily could tip over, especially if tire pressure goes down on one side, honda and toyotas make great cars and are reliable but not for long distances and highway driving, if it's windy where you live, they will be all over the place. subaru has a lower center of gravity better handiling and better for the highway, you don't have to worry about snow, right? maby you should think of something less expensive that is not AWD, but it's just a thought. hope this helps.
