Ummm okay, get a ninja 250, and if you wanna be cool, take the 250 stickers off. The only difference in the 250 and 500 is the bore and stroke on the engine. THAT'S IT. The bikes are identical in every other way. So whoever said people find them "uncool" really should do their homework "if they know anything about bikes."
IMO a good starter bike would be an old CBR F2. Great track bikes, but very forgiving. Stay away from GSX-R or any other cafe racer for your first bike.

For a beginner bike, ignore what's 'cool.' Get an old run-down 250 or 125 bike cheap (under $1,000). Once you learn how to ride well on that, then sell it and get yourself a nice Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha, or Honda 600cc. Then after you learn that well, move to 750 or 1000cc.
$100 a month?! Sweet Jesus! I quoted myself ( a 17 year old male mind you) with a 1986 Honda 250 and it would be $250 a YEAR.

Man, forget about the beginner bike get what you want. That doesn’t mean get a new one but get the size and kind you want. Because its not that hard to learn to ride. I had never ridden a bike before and bought a 600 for my first bike and I could handle it fine. I took the MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation) Course and by the end of it they asked me if I wanted to help teach it sometime. As long as you aren’t trying to do stupid **** the first day out then get what you want.

^^^^ what he said. Don't do STUPID ****, and you'll be fine. Also, make sure you can lift it off the ground by yourself. The idea is not to dump your bike, but it happens.
Tip: On rainy days, make SURE you put your kickstand on something SOLID! LOL.
Yeah, I felt like an ***.

hmmm, is there a story behind that?
I learned on a dirtbike, I think it was a 125, my first bike I bought was a 600 Ninja. Moved to a Gixxer 750 and am looking at a Suzuki SV650 right now. Problem with the "Super Sport" street bikes is the high insurance. SV650 is a decent looking bike but is rated as a standard, the insurance is lower. There are too many stupid people on race-replicas thinking they are Kevin Schwanz or something. I was driving down the freeway the other day and some idiot was doing saddle stands and acrobatics on an R6...at 80 MPH...in traffic...nuff said. But if you are seriously a beginner (no riding experience) a 250 isn't a bad idea...you will just be trading up shortly when you get better and want more power.
Oh, and yes...a Goof2 is a good beginner bike as well...very forgiving.

I came close to doin that a couple days ago till i realized it was really soft, spanner wrench in my tool bag did a good job
My first bike was/is my SV650, been riding it for a year and will probably be riding it for a long time to come. Its got enough power to not get bored of it, but its light and nimble enough that really anyone can ride it.
Take the msf course. then go find a small used bike. A 250 would be fine but if you dont feel like upgrading very soon then I would recomend a Suzuki SV650. They are very reliable and extremly easy to ride but once you progress as a rider they have great potential. Wear all your gear (road rash sucks) be careful and focus on the fundamentals of riding. fast bikes dont make for fast riders, or for old ones. Solid skill makes any bike perform. I like the SV650 because it makes plenty of power for freeway use but is still light and nimble enough that it wont overwhelm you if you get into a tight spot. its a bike you can learn on but still keep for a while. I have been working at a honda motorcycle dealership for 6 years and we see a lot of new riders. The two biggest mistakes I see new riders make are buying too much bike, and not taking the class. I had a costomer who was convinced that he needed a cbr600f4i to be cool. He bought it, against my advice and promptly flipped it over and totaled it. then the genuis came back and bought a CBR929RR as a replacement. That bike has been crashed about six times now and i dont think he rides anymore. dont be that guy, get someting responsible and be careful. I really want you to get a bike so i will leave all the really horrible stories out but the moral of all of them is the same, reasonable bike and careful riding = you living longer.

Getting a 250 is a waste. Get a 600cc bike. I ride with a lot of people new riders and seasoned and i would say 90% of them rode 600's for their first bike. Just take your time and only go to your limit.

I've ridden mostly cruzers but i have borrowed a few sport bikes.. I'd say a CBR 600 would be a good place to start, I really enjoyed my friends CBR600 F4i. was friendly in the low RPM range for city cruzin, and when you cranked on it, it was plenty fast. its a very easy bike to ride if you dont do any thing stupid. His GSXR 1000 however is just plane Twitchy.... you twitch the throttle and the noes lifts up. Feels like a bit too much for any thing but a track.
The Bike I ride most often.,... an 86 HD FXR. Love that bike.

depnends on how tall you are too short people and big bikes do not mix. you should be able to sit up on the bike with your feet flat on the ground and not have to tip toe it.
I would get a buell P3 Blast, nice height and not too fast. If you don't want a sport bike, look at HD 883 sportster's
This Buell is a 2000 and runs around $3,000. http://www.rmh-d.com/popup.php?ref=i...popTitle=Blast
