Test drove:
1) Toyota Corolla - nice, a lil plasticky. Comfortable soft ride, but the outside appearance didn't do much for me. I didn't pursue it cause the sales woman kept talking to my mother who was along for the ride...tryin to convince HER to make me lease the car. I was like "It's MY CAR, I'M paying for it"
2) VW Golf and Jetta (yes, both) - both very nice cars inside and out, smooth, if a little underpowered. I got scared off by the potential for high repair costs once the warranty was up
3) Honda Civic Coupe and Sedan (yes, both!) - felt almost the same as the EL, but I didn't like the lack of VTEC or the rear drums. Inside felt a little cheap.
4) Nissan Sentra SeR - fast, good power, but it just felt way too plasticky inside, not nice at all. Things felt loose, poorly fitted. Also the salesman didn't seem interested in making a sale.
5) Mazga Protege 5 - pretty cool looking at the time, but I had qualms about reliability so I didn't even try to get a quote.

2000 Pontiac Grand AM GT - Love the power and cheap parts, hate the early 90's sci-fi interior and poor gas mileage.
1999 Impreza - Too small. Couldn't get comfortable in the driver's seat. I'd go German for the price-tag...
.. and then my mechanic was selling the EL, and it was love at first drive.

When shopping for my current 2003 EL last year, I looked at:
1. Toyota Matrix - Overall very nice, just not enough luxury for me and also felt underpowered (in spite of the fact that is has more power than the EL). Braking felt somewhat weak to me.
2. Nissan Altima - Wasn't all that impressed with the fit and finish, but the car had much more power than the EL. Handling and braking were also decent.
3. Nissan Sentra SE-R - Once again fit and finish were not very good (almost on par with some of the domestics). Otherwise a decent package with adequate power, handling, and braking. Again no luxury though.
4. Honda Accord - In order to get this car the way I wanted it (ie. leather, etc.) the price would have been out of my budget (also since the car had just come out -2004 model, interest rates were not all that good).
When shopping for my old 2000 1.6EL, I looked at:
1. Infiniti G20 - Very nice car with pretty much everything I wanted (luxury, performance, handling, etc.). Prices seemed a little too high for me though based on what you were getting (not much more than you get with a 1.6EL).
2. Honda Civic Si - Pretty much the same car as the 1.6EL, but decided against it based on my love for 4 door sedans.

I've test drove the following cars recently
2004 EL...just had to
2003 SiR
Mazdaspeed Protoge....Waste of money
TSX....I want one!!
2004 RSX Type S...I want the engine, not the car.
and there's a late model MR2 for sale down the road from me that might require a test drive
