Thinking about a Mazda3
Bought one! When you see them in person the sedan is hidious. The 5-door is definitely the flagship of the 3's. Traded in my wifes 03 volvo for the 3. It's sweet and actually fast. I recommend the 3. At least go out and test drive one. You'll see.

But I remember seeing this at the parts store years ago and it scared the s.hit out of me.
Pharoh the reason why you saw that was because Ford borrows Mazda technology from time to time. The Ford Probe uses a FS-DE engine. The same Mazda engine used in the Protege. For the Probe V-6 models, they use the same Mazda engine as the 626 and MX-6. This is also seen where the Ford Escape is basically Mazda's design, that they used for the Mazda Tribute. Early to mid 90's escorts also used Mazda technology in that they had the same engine as the Protege. This isn't Ford controlling Mazda, it's Ford using Mazda technology. Don't jump to conclusions.
As far as the Mazda 6, they do use a Ford variant engine for the 6 cylinder. However Mazda has made their own improvements to it. Yes, personally I wouldn't buy that particular product because Ford had alot to do with the design, but Mazda has made it clear that they used this design because it is a sound design. Again, Mazda has Ford parts and research available to them, but they are by no means required to use it. If they do it was because of Mazda's own decision to do so.

i agree with nookiemonster about the "typical responses" about mazda. It does seem like ignorance. It would be like some redneck saying: "i'd never buy a honda, they're cars are too small and unreliable"
imo, honda has been around longer so their reliability is good.
but mazda/nissan are quickly catching up.

thanks for the enlightenment Nookiemonster. It's not ignorance though, it's a trust issue with me. A salesman won't admit to me that the Mazda 6 has a Ford powerplant, what's that supposed to tell me?
I have the same problem with Mitsubishi as well. They had a bad year in North America and suddenly Chrysler is going to send some people out to help them get their s.hit together and teach them some things....Forgive me if that doesn't instill loads of confidence. "Hi, we're going to show you how to build two exact replicas and market them under different names. Then we're going to show you how to build s.hit for idiots."
I like the cars pure. Honda, Nissan and Toyota have never used, only given. To my knowledge, only Toyota has actually given it's techology in the form of the 86 Chev Nova and the Camry engine for the early Malibu's. Honda is going to give the CRV egine to Saturn and Nissan....well I don't know.
I don't hate Mazda, they've done a great job with the cars they've put out and they're marketing techniques are wonderful...I just don't like the relationship with Ford.

Mazda 6 will sell, but won't take away the customers shopping for family sedans. The style could be more subdued, but with optional kits for people desiring sporty. Mazda 3 out did 6. In that class, I think VW Passat looks the best. Reliability is a different story.
Can't stand the Accord exterior.

The 1st generation Probe V6 had Ford's Vulcan V6, which can be found in many Ford vehicles such as the Ranger and Taurus (SHO version I think).
I own a 91 Ford Probe V6 so I am sure of this.
A Mazda V6 swap is easily done on the 2nd gen Probes, but not so easily on a !st gen.
BTW, my Ford Probe was made by Mazda Motors. It says so on my door sticker.

Actually, the Geo/Chevy Prism was nothing more than a Corolla.
I've decided to save my money and sacrifice. That way I can buy an apartment in a year or so. That's more important to me now. Vicky only has 36,804 miles and is a little over 2 years old. I'm sure I can ride her for another 5 or 6 years and get 120-140K miles out of her.
