Hmm... I'm not a big fan of the interiors on Nissans... The engine is nice but I'm sure you want something spirted and fun, so I'll say go for the TSX.

I really think you need to be comparing the Maxima to the TL. The TSX doesn't really compare in size. You're looking at a 4 banger vs a pretty big V6... both of which are held very highly all over the world for their design and reliability. So I don't think you should have much issue with them.
The Maxima is going to be sporty-ish, they're fun to drive, but its a pretty big car. The TSX is probably going to be better for really messing around, so it depends what you're getting after.
I would put the new TL in this equation and if you're looking to stay under 30K, I have a feeling a Max is going to be pushing it. They've made them pretty expensive of recient.
.... and having about 350K on Nissans in the family, without ever having a major powertrain or critical functional issue, I'll vouch that nissans are pretty reliable cars.

The newest Maxima looks like ***. I'd go for the TSX out of the two. However, for about 30K, you could also get a standard WRX or an Evo VIII. Just some other things to think about...
