probably is like any other "sport" shift tranny.
what do you want to know?
its nice to be able to decide which gear your in, but its not better than a manual or auto performance wise. today's auto tranny's are really quick at shifting and know when its best to shift.

most of my experience has been with hondas (autos) in the past 5 years. i live in a place with a lot of hills and i thought it would be interesting how it (mazda 3 w/AS) stacks up.
auto for stop & go, auto w/manual override to get rid of that lag, hunting for gears when going up-hill.

Basically, the sportshift allows you to choose what gear you're in, and when you're in it. It also gives you the ability to leave it to the car...basically just auto. Great for getting oh you know...road head...I mean um...burgers or something while on the go...yeah that's it.
In all seriousness though, the sportshift is a good thing for those who don't want to fuss with stop and go traffic, but still have the ability to change gears at will. However, without the use of a clutch, it is impossible to truely rev-match the engine and transmission, or do such techniques like heel-to-toe driving. You would never have the same control as a manual tranny, but for a city driver who doesn't care about hitting twisties, heel to toe, and drag racing....well this is a great option to be able to choose.
I might also add, that the Mazda 3 is the only car in its class that offers this, as well as navigation and Xenon Headlights...still...I like the old Protege's better. Much more rigid chassis, and refined suspension for hard cornering...I'm still looking forward to the rumored AWD Turbo Mazdaspeed version though.
