Add me to the list of people who's considering buying a used Miata for a weekend car.
For those that think that Miata's can't compare with S2k's, think again.
I go canyon running with S2k guys here in so cal, and i brought one of my friend with a miata. He has about 20+ track days under his belt. I used to make fun of miata's until he and I went to Buttonwillow together, miata's are much faster than our cars. On the canyon run, palomar, my friend impressed so many of the S2k guys, and he really impressed one of the guys with a porshe c4. The porshe guys wants to get a miata, and another 2Sk guy already bought a used one.

Here's my take on the whole thing, If the miata is gay... then maybe we NEED more gay cars considering how awsome they perform at autocrosses and road racing events. In my opinion a car that just goes in a straight line, and handles like a boat on land is the GAYEST thing out there...I've always called the Miata the poor mans sports car, now that doesn't necessairly mean they're bad cars, they just farly inexpensive for what you get.

Here's a take from a current Miata owner:
The Miata, for some unknown reason, does have a reputation as being a "gay" car. But in reality, it is the #1 best selling sports car of all time, and the only car to last this long without a major design change. There was a change in 99, but that was mostly exterior and appearance, and many parts from the 99+ will bolt right on to my 95M. The entire suspension design, subframe, and basic engine design is all the same. The only major additions were VVT (variable valve timing, Mazda's version of BMW's Double Vanos system) and a 6th gear.
Stock for stock, the Miata is not a fast car. It'll run the 1/4mi in about the same time as a Civic EX, but the Miata was not built for straight line racing. Look at any Mazda ads, and the car istelf... the car was designed to out handle anything else in its price class. No other car offered for around 19K-25K (and those are the fully loaded models) even comes close to the skidpad, autocross, and road course capability of the Miata. The S2000, while a faster car in straight line speed, will fall behind the Miata in the curves, I've seen it time and time again at the local SCCA and Porsche club events, not to mention the local road course races. Miatas can carry ungodly speeds through corners, and therefore do not have to speed back up as much at the end of each corner.
Now, let's talk modified. Roll cage ($400), Good coilover suspension ($1100), Street/Race tires such as the Toyo Proxes ($600), Axxis race pads and SuperBlue DOT4 brake fluid ($100), stainless steel brake lines ($100), and you've got a car, that at an Autocross course, will compete evenly with cars such as the Porsche Boxster S, the 911, and many other much more expensive cars. Now, yes, these cars are MUCH faster in the 1/4mi, and will also be faster at road course racing because of the straightaways (but not by much), but autocrossing is all about balance, braking, and turning. Not to mention that the cost of this race prepared Miata (including the car and all parts listed above) will still be less than any of the other mentioned cars' stock prices. Repair costs are also much lower if you do send your Miata into a tirewall.
The other fun part: for $2150 (Flyin' Miata's Stage 1 Kit), you can have a turbo kit pushing 12lbs on a bone stock motor, and you're in the mid 13's with a good driver. Honda can't do that with that small amount of money, most other cars can not either.
(Speaking to the idiot stereotypers out there) So go ahead, call my Miata gay. Let's see if you can ride along with me at a road course, and not throw up as I drift turn 3 at 85mph, much less avoid screaming like a little girl.

That's terrible. You mean all those years of Ford's research and development in auto racing, all the money spent developing top notch champ cars, rally cars and NASCAR team development are now available to the Mazdaspeed organization? Yeah, that sucks.

Ford and Mazda share NO research and development facilities. Mazda's facilities for MazdaSpeed are in California and Dallas, while the main research and development facilities are in Sugar Land (outside Houston, TX). Ford facilites are either not in the same town, or if they are, they're a few blocks away in a totally separate building, sharing no staff.
Ford does own a big share of Mazda, but they have also let Mazda pretty much run itself. Look at the cars, Mazda is concerned more with handling (even the Protege5 wagon handles damn well at an autocross), Ford is concerned with muscle cars and more mainstream "Soccer Moms" with SUV's and vans, along with the truck market. None of Ford's cars are designed around responsive handling, instead all are built for power (trucks and Mustangs) or for economy (minivans and Foci).
Good comparison with the GM and Subaru by nookiemonster, it's the same situation with Fod and Mazda. Just because the parent company owns a big share doesn't mean the parent company dictates build quality or design direction.

I dont care what anyone says but Mazda is making some sick looking cars lately. To be honest I never heard the Miata being refered to as a "gay" car..... the car looks tight and I heard the handeling is amazing. I havn't heard that many good things about Mazda's reliablity but besides that everything is tight.

From a previous Mazda owner, I hated my Mazda until I replaced it with my civic.
The Mazda was an older car, but I didn't appreciate the power and handling of the little guy until I got my civic.
I can't imagine anyone with a civic putting down a Miata......that is ultimate gayness (someone driving a civic putting down a Mazda miata?).

Really? That's great to know considering that I am officially now a honda lover since my civic. Damn i wanna know more comparisons. In my point of view, ITS A MAZDA compard to an S200. Mazda is now owned by FORD (Fix Or Repair Daily [lol]) and is officially UGLY. I'm suprised that gay people even like it?! I'd choose an S200 over it anyday.

lease: Better not buy an Aston Martin or Jaguar then. But since you think your Civic is so great, why don't you take a run with me in my Mazda and I'm sure that I'll disgrace your civic. And I DO OWN a civic as well as a MAZDA. Go do some research on Mazda...did any other Japanese car companies win the 24 hour Le Mans Championship? Did HONDUH?
Next time read the thread before you post.
Thanks for playing.

By the way it's S2000 not S200.

oh yeah and on the s2000 thing well miata was made first and they are similar, but i'm a firm believer that the s2000 is just an updated and more powerful version of the del sol. why i believe this is because the del sol was the the little fast sporty car back in the day (w/ a b16 of course) and now we have the s2000. they also some what look similar, but not that similar you know.

Nope try again. It's the updated version of the Honda S500 of the late 1960's. See it here:

I never bashed your opinion, but simply pointed out your common misconceptions. Don't get all worked up because you are misinformed. The numbers don't lie. The S2000 yes is a great car, but bang for the buck and track drivability, the Miata is a better value. Even if it looks gay or whatever.
You think Ford needs to update their styling and engineering huh? Well did you know that all companies owned by Ford operate independently of the parent company?
Here's a link to Aston Martin's website. The cars classically used in 007 James Bond movies. A Ford daughter company. All cars are researched, designed, engineered in the UK, and "made to order." In other words you put in an order, and they assemble one for you, as opposed to going to a lot and buying it. They are also hand assembled. --Doesn't sound like a Ford to me...
http://www.astonmartin.com/base.html
BTW I never said the Miata was a better car than the S2000, was just pointing out that they share the same styling cues. Go anywhere outside the Honda camp, and the general concensus is that the S2000 looks very similar to a Miata. I simply stated that although Miatas are not the most handsome car out there, they will hold their own on a track or road course, certainly much better than a Civic. I find it somewhat puzzling that a civic owner would be so quick to bash a car which is race proven throughout the SOLO championships and road racing throughout the world. I agree it is not a great looking car, but when you look at what it was originally made for, it excels, and especially for the 16-19K price tag. The S2000 is a superior car in its own right, however, considering the $32K price tag, it better be.
Oh yeah great way to rate a car company. "The name sounds nasty."
lease: Good job! And I suppose that since Lamborghini sounds like a noodle it's a crappy car too right?
lease:
If my Mazdaspeed is whack what does that make the civic? Ever thought about that? Are you even educated on the subject? I bet you'd be hardpressed to find some good arguments showing that Mazda is a bad company, and anything you'd find on it would be just as easy to find on Honda.
I suggest you grow up and realize that this has all been covered in the posts preceeding yours. I shouldn't have to reiterate this to you. That's why they invented reading. I'm not bashing you or your opinion, but pointing out your closed mindedness. However, I'm sure you'll find something ignorant to say to bash me or the car none the less...

I don't know about you guys, but it really seems like this site is getting saturated with young, spoiled kids. I have nothing against 16 year olds who are lucky enough to have parents that buy them a new civic, but it seems like the maturity level here has dropped, and alot of these people sure act like whiney little brats.

i hope you're not talkin about me, cause you don't wanna stir me up buddy. for your info on me i'm not some spoiled kid with a new car, because my entire life i never got a damn thing and my father being who he was felt bad about it and bought me a good car that would get me where i need to go. i didn't want a new car, i wanted a $5000 96 or 97. i've had a job since i was 13 and had it for 3 1/2 years. it was hard work and the pay sucked and since i'm havin a hard year in school seeing how it's my junior year it's hard maintaing my grades and stayin in the top 3 of my class i don't have a job for now. not only with having a job i had bills. i payed for my insurance, cell phone, satelite, and regular home phone. Now tell me AM I a spoiled kid. Fvck NO I work my *** off and probably more so than you and it obviously shows seeing how i've gotten letters from 7 universites in the past 2 months and hopefully one of them will fill my needs so that i can go on and become a pharmaceutical engineer. i've said my peace & i'll be goin now.

Woah easy there, I was talking about that girl there bro. Obviously...
And please don't tell me that I haven't worked in MY LIFE. When I was in HS I drove a 13 year old Maxima that I worked and paid for. I joined the Marine Corps to put myself through school when I graduated, and have been to war. USMC infantry, Operation Iraqi Freedom, 2003. I have 5 medals, and 7 ribbons with more pending. I'm 22 years old, own a 2001 civic, 2003.5 Mazdaspeed, and a 1999 Gixxer, all that I work my own *** for. I graduate college this year. I live on my own away from my parents. I have since I was 17. Everything I am and have is the result of my own hard work. I will be starting work for Disney sometime in the next year as a computer animation artist by the way. I work as a Real Estate Agent right now, being that I'm in the reserves and haven't graduated yet. Sorry for the rant, just thought I'd tell you a little about myself seeing that you assumed alot already.
But I wasn't talking about you I was talking about Megagirl or whatever her name is.
