shifting gears on slippery ground
the snow came wayyy too early for us in CT this year!
This used to happen to me last year too- when im driving in the snow, comming to a stop sign, i normally shift into 1st just before i come to a complete stop- but i noticed that if i try to do this while its snowing, and the roads are a little slick- i hear/feel my clutch grinding. It confuses the hell out of me- because my car is skidding, though the brake is applied fully, wheels locked....this should accomodate a nice smooth shift...but i guess the fact that my car is slipping messes it all up!?
now im just extra careful when i shift in bad weather or icy roads.. i make sure to come to a complete non-skidding stop before i shift.
anyone know what the problem is?
PS- anyone notice thats its tough to shift into first gear unless your going less than 15mph? or is that just my problem

its supposed to be hard to shift into first gear when you're still moving. its just for safety incase you try to put your car in first gear, or else your car will probably red line and all kinds of good stuff.

yeah there is no need to downshift to 1st, that is retarded.. just leave it in whatever gear you are in until the RPM's fall just alittle bit above idle and then shift to neutral, thats all you have to do and you'll be fine....

yeah, don't shift into first if you're moving. If you want a gear to slow you down, use second. Also, you CAN shift into first going like 40. You just have to force it a little. But, anyways, don't do it! =D

im not "downshifting" because my foot is on the clutch the whole time... im just putitng it into first just before i stop to save time... understand that i am stopping at a stop sign and plan on driving past it after i stop.

Don't force it. Ease it into 1st gear a second or two before you stop. It'll slide right in.
And a word of advice on snow. Always use the higher gears to avoid wheelspin. Wheelspin + FWD = no control. Don't assume you're invincible just because you have FWD, AWD or even 4WD. I've seen plenty of idiots in 4WDs in the ditch because they had no driving sense.
Another tip, gear down before stopping in slippery conditions to avoid touching the brakes. It won't hurt the transmission if you don't abuse it.
