gti vr6
i've been thinking about selling the ol' 2001 civic and getting a used gti vr6.
i've never been in a golf before. what do i need to know about vw's.
i'd just like a car w/ more torque.
should i get the 1999/2000 or are there years i should avoid?

GTI's are great, especially the newer 1.8T's. Take a look over at VWVORTEX.COM , on the forums. You will find ALL of the information you need there!
And I think you'll really like the dubber crowd.

2 things, Heavy and primitive suspension. other then that they are decent cars, if not a bit expensive to repair.
I'd suggest geting an older one, it'd at least be lighter. Persoally I'd only get the old Rabbit GTi. (Can we say Race car?) but thats because of the type of racing I do, Autocross. Gti's (at least the newer ones) Dont really do well in this type of racing due to the 2 reasons above. Infact there are a couple of Gtis that autocross around here (some VR6s) and I pretty much allways out run them. (In my "Slow" civic)

thanks, that's the kinda stuff i wanted to hear.
i didn't think they were any heavier than our cars. so whats it weigh?
i also thought it had a stiffer chassis than our cars, but i could be misinformed.
i also run autocross. i see a lot of old rabbits there and they do like 3 wheel motion over some of the tighter or faster corners.
but really the vettes run the course around here.

the new VR6 weighs 3,036 lbs , the 1.8T is 2,934 lbs with about 63% of that weight on the nose. thats almost 500LBS heavier then my EX Coupe with worse weight distribution. (Civic has about 59% of the weight on the nose) they also have a torsion beam axle , a relitivly primitive type of rear suspension. (they have MacPherson struts on the front like us, but we have double wish bone on the rear)
The old ones are much better, they have less horse power but handle much much better then the new ones. also Lifting the inside rear tire isnt that uncomon on a FWD car. especially if you are running sticky tires with the stock suspension. as far as a stiff chassis.... if it does, SO? its still heavier, and weight affects handling differently then it affects acceleration.

I've lifted a tire before in my vic, wasn't autocrossing, but might as well been. I had to give up autoX cuz I love understeer a little too much and I can't afford tires. Anyways, there's a GTI VR6 that's always parked around here. If nothing else, it's a beauty. I wouldn't mind having one of those.
