the only trannys that are worthwhile are BMW's SMG, the new MR-2 Spyder 's tranny and of course the Ferrari paddle shifters. Basically everything else is crap imo. I don't like the Sportshift in Honda/Acuras. I'd rather just mash the gas to downshift and go from there
the SMG in BMW's, and the paddles in ferrari's/Astons, and the MR-s aren't really automatics.
But basically every new benz
Acura TL/CL
Prelude
PT Turbo
Stratus
Mazda 3,6, protege 5
Porsche tiptronic
Audi/VW Tiptronic
Basically any new car over 20k with an auto tranny, with a few exceptions like the accord.

like some ones already said...anything over 22000 or so..the smg technology that BMW uses is a based on the ferrari and uses something that allows it to shift faster than the ones in like the mazda 6's or cheaper ones. I still would rather have a manual tranny...the tiptronic just doesnt have that standard feel...you just can "rip" it
Prelude auto has way too much lag though. Try one in a TSX. Its like night and day. Of course, not as good as manual.... but Honda is working on a 6 speed that works more like SMG (with clutch) than the current SportShift. The new NSX will be the first car with this.

I believe BMW SMG requires you to shift gears. You don't have an "Automatic" Option. Ferrari F1 works that way too, you are REQUIRED to shift gears. It has a hydraulically operated clutch, not a torque converter and fluids like an automatic.
I think you'd be hard pressed to find many decient cars that don't have the auto-manual these days... the question is, are any of them fast enough to make it worthwhile?
Acura's sucks, so does VW/Audi's (although the new 6 speed sequential in the TT is going to be sick if it isn't a nightmare to fix)... they take so long, the car is actually faster if you leave the damn thing in D and let the computer do it. Mercedes has it, but the AMG automatics shift so fast its kinda useless (they shift twice as fast as a human could do it). Porsche's is the only one I've heard that's actually quick.... and Porsche, those smart German's they are, said there wasn't a paddle gearbox good enough for the Carrera GT.... hence, its got 3 pedals and a lever on the console....
With the exception of a select few very expensive ones, those manumatics are there to just make lazy people feel marginally less lazy, but when it takes 4 seconds to shift the gears, and the computer automatically shifts it in 1.5, why would you bother?

Audi/VW is coming out with a Shiftronic style clutch that uses two separate drive shafts or something to that effect and as such eliminates the slight dead spot between shifting gears. Apparantly they've been using it in their race cars for years.
Pardon the vagueness, but I read it in a New York Times article over a month ago.

well put. the MRS Spyder has a great tranny (best auto ever to come out in a toyota), and those other two are also great. Rest is crap...
My friend has a TSX with the wannabe "manual" and I really don't like it.
