id say 5 or 9, cross the neon(srt-4) same dam thing but faster and still ugly and the cavalier of your list, they dont even make new z-24's do they? isnt it the ecotec engine now?
WOW, thats one hell of a list. Due to the fact that all you want is a car faster then your civic that can be modded well and thats a manual any of these would do it for you. But im bored so I'll do a little personal write up
1. Mazdaspeed Protege - Looks like a sweet car. 170 HP turbocharged car sounds like fun to me
2. Nissan Sentra Se-R Spec V - Sweet *** car. This would be my second choice. Tons of low end torque, very fun to daily drive. They don’t have a HUGE after market but its getting better. Plus I never see spec V's running around. Test drive one of these for sure!!
3. Dodge Neon Srt-4 - For modifications and power this one would be the best. But it’s still a neon I and would never ever own one of these. They are also ugly as sin.
4. Mitsubishi Eclipse (the v6 one) - I hear that the reliability of these cars is horrible, plus everyone in the damn neighborhood has one.
5. Toyota Celica GT-S - My FIRST choice. These are just a thrill to drive. If your haven’t felt what lift is on one of these, go do it! You will be hooked. The handling on these cars is the best in its class. The aftermarket isn’t as good as Honda but its getting better.
6. Ford Focus SVT - Don’t know anything about these except they are butt ugly.
7. Cavalier Z-24 - I would never buy a z-24, ive herd there are so many reliability issues with these its not even funny.
8. Mitsubishi Lancer OZ Rally - Another good choice. But if you got one of these I bet you would kick yourself everyday for not getting an evo
9. Volkswagen Golf GTI 1.8T - Once again I don’t know much about this car except its a VW and im definatly not a fan of VW lol.

Well when I bought my civic I was considering the GT-S celica, but seemed to much of a feminine car for me, and felt too small. It's still a great car though. Slalom speed 69.1. Definitely a curve performer.
When I bought my mazda, I also looked at the Sentra SE-R Spec V, friend of mine has it, and the Neon SRT-4. The Sentra has ho hum styling, and the interior looks cheap and plastic like. It felt decent on the power curve, but kinda seemed like the car felt lazy, as if it didn't want to go where the engine wanted it to. Shifting was also very difficult.
The Neon wow, what power you can get for so cheap right? It's nice, but doesn't come with limited slip differential like the mazda, and can't handle nearly as well. Yes it's got more power, if you like straight line kinda driving, but it's not like you can't mod other cars to match. Not only that, the neon is ugly as sin, and I don't have a mullet, so I don't think I qualify haha.
I also looked at the 1.8T golf, which was a great and awesome looking car, but I can't get over the reliability issues. My cousins Jetta breaks down every week it seems like and it's brand new. And I'm not talking minor recalls. The golf also seemed less athletic around curves.
In the end I chose my Mazda, for obvious reasons. If you do go with Mazda the first thing you should do is visit www.spool-turbo.com and pick up the FMIC. The stock innercooler just doesn't cut it, it's quite small, and with the FMIC, you'll see gains of around 12 whp. Pick up a boost controller, gauges, and an air fuel controller and you'll be gold. And if you 've got the cash get the forged internals, run 15-18 pounds of boost and 270+ hp.
In the end it's your choice, but obviously I like the mazdaspeed. Bear in mind that it's the best handling FWD production car to date. Quoted from Car and Driver and Sport Compact Car. Slalom speeds of 70.3. The WRX has a slalom of 68.2. It's the 8th best handling car in the world.
So take your pick, if you want straight line, curves, or a little of both.
