okay so i went yesterday to look for a second car as a daily driver so
i can just work on the vic. so i found a
99 ecilpse GS-T turbo convert. w/ 38k miles.
my question is.... i have heard that certain year eclipses with the
turbo were not that good and mechanically alot of problems.
so is the 99' one of them or am i safe with that ?
thanks in advance ..

Jay if you are looking for a secon car as a reliable car, i would not go with the Eclipse. Mitsu had loads of problems with the Eclipses, and still do. If you want a reliable car your best bet is to go with honda, toyota, or subaru....

I thought you were buying a house?? What happened to that Jay....If you are going to spend that much, I can get you a deal on a honda....I got a connection at Valley Stream Honda. You can get a new dx or lx civic....2003 left over
damn dude, honestly i'd buy a car just to beat around in while you build up the civic..
plus, i'd start saving up for a house like scott mentioned, but its your call..
so what are you plannin' for the ol' vic?

saving for the house is well underway,
i am working on that allready but it will take a little time to put together
50-60 grand to put down on the house, especially if i wanna stay in LI.
im gonna use my bonus to get the car.
as for the vic im in the process of getting my hands on a k20a2 and then after a few months if all goes well then i will begin the saving for a turbo

i learned my lesson about buying new cars....or newer....
older cars don't look cool, but for what you shell out for a car that's 5 years old or newer, you can make a "classic" car sweet.
.....BTW, this is what i might have to do, except i SELL the car instead of work on it....

but seriously, instead of getting an eclipse as a daily driver, get an old beater like everyone else posted up above... the crx or 240sx ideas sound rather tempting... and cheaper too.. well, i dont know about the 240 swap..

buy an old Subaru or an older SI CRX or something like that. You dont need a new car...you need something reliable to get you from point a to point b.
Why dont you get another PRIZM?? They are cheap, reliable, run great, and dependable.

Riceboy if you're serious, I'm looking for people to help me out with a possible project car in the future, and you do live near me...I live in summerlin....RB26DETT can drop easily into a maxima by the way...
BUY THE ECLIPSE!!!!!!!!! dude do you realize how hard it is to find a 99 turbo??? Let alone it has under 40k!!!! Is it 5-speed, and how much do they want for that car??? My bro has had a 1st and 2nd gen turbo'd eclipse. Hey had them checked out BEFORE he bought them. If you know anything about cars, then its not hard to know a good car thats been taken care of, from a P.O.S. that was the weekend camping trip car!! So all I can say is if it is a 5-speed, check it out and if everything is good, then buy that B!tch!!!!
And in my opinion I would bag the K20 swap, and put the money into the Eclipse!!! With a K20 swap you are still behind (your daily driver) the Eclipse!!! The Eclipse/Talon is by far the best car in gains from bolt ons! They love em!!! I would give up my
Honda in a heart beat for a DSM!!!!

RB25DETs fit in there as well....

I would imagine the RB26 fits... you'd just have to do the ATTESSA conversion with it.

Mainly because the SR20DET is the best setup without compromising suspension and handling performance. I see that you like autocross. You should know this as well. After I went autocrossing for the first time, I decided that for me, a good car is not only one that goes fast, but also can slingshot around corners and stay flat and in control. By the way, if you did convert it into a variable AWD car with the ATEZZA setup, then you have just destroyed the cars drift capabilities, which makes the 240 so much fun. Not only that, do you have any idea how much that type of work would cost? At that point you are better off going to motorex and getting an actual skyline. That's like saying I'm gonna put an F20C in my civic and convert it to RWD. That's why I prefer the SR20DET. Next time don't assume that I don't know about the RB25DET...I'm a Nissan fanatic...even though I drive a Honda...

I'm well aware of the balance. The RB25 is about 200 lbs heavier than the KA the car comes with. The fact of the matter is that most people who look for a "project car", are looking for a street rocket. To autocross in a car that you would build up with several hundred turbo HP is just flat out dumb. You won't see much success out of a B-series turbo hatchback in street mod. Most, if not ALL of the B-Series hatchbacks seriously running in Street Mod are all motor. There isn't enough room to get it flying, especially in a turbo car (the perfect example is the 2nd Gen MR2, the turbo cars suck at AutoX and the much less powerful N/A version does very well cuz it has low end and no lag). Unless you had a course that really let you open it up, you'd probably run well in a 240 with just the KA24 under the hood. Once you start adding lag, boost and excessive power, you gotta trail brake to keep the turbo spooled up, and if you don't know what you're doing, you'll be driving most of the course with the rear end facing forward.
And I never assumed that you weren't aware of an RB25. So I don't know where the hell you got that from.
