how do you park?
how do you park?
I just put my handbrake up, and leave my gear in neutral. I heard that it might be better if I also put it in 1st, or reverse?
How do you park your car? What's the best way?

I always put it in second gear and the hand brake.
I just like shifting from second alot thats why i leave there.
For example at a stop i leave it in neutral, shift to second then first gear and starting going. Or when I want to back out I shift to second then reverse.
I dont Know its just habit i got in doing.

First and the handbrake.
Friend of mine has his car stolen because they cut his E brake line and the car was in neutral...towed the sucker away....

i have an auto and i always put the ebrake up then put it in Park. as i learned from an experience, an auto has a good chance of developing problems if u just jam it into Park without using a ebrake. the piece that locks ur wheels when u put it in P (forgot name), has a lot of pressure on it from this esspeically on a hill. for those of u who have automatic, did u ever notice how ur car sort of bounces back and forth a couple times when u put ur car in Park on a little hill? well, when it bounces and it usually does, thats where the problem occurs after a while. the guy who changed my transmission on my old car said that the tranny broke cuz of that kind of pressure on that part over time. so from now on i just use the ebrake and then park, it never bounces back and forth liek it did when i didnt use the ebrake.
I always do e-brake hard and reverse. My moms Saab HAS to be in reverse for the car to turn off...some weird thing about Saabs, anyway it's the first manual I ever drove (that's right, my first stick was a turbo convertible
)so I'm in the habit now of leaving it in reverse
)so I'm in the habit now of leaving it in reverse I always do first and e-brake. My dad everytime he drives a stick he leaves it in 1st and no e-brake it really irritates me since I go straight to clutch and brake when I get in. Or I forget to hit the brake and push the clutch in and the car starts rolling haha

HEHE anybody have a funny parking story? Think i'll share mine.. i asked my g/f to move my car so her grandmother could get out (i was parked behind her) and she does.. she pulls back up to the same spot. about 15-20 mins later theres a knock at the door. it seems that my car has rolled out into the street blocking traffic traffic coming up the street. This guy at the door says "um hey, is that your car backed into the street? "i'm like, oh ****!" I run outside to move the car back into the driveway while 3 cars sit waiting for me to get out the way =\ it was pretty embarassing.

Is it best to shift then ebrake or ebrake then shift into drive? When you're going. I feel that bounce that you're talking about but not when I'm parking, when I'm leaving.

when i come to a stop, i pull up the ebrake and then put it into Park. i think there is less pressure on the tranny that way. but when i leave, i put the car in Drive and then put down the ebrake
how do you decide whether to leave it in 1st or reverse when parking? does it matter?
I've been driving manual for about a year now and always have just used neutral, but it feels weird when I park on a hill knowing the only thing keeping my car from rolling back is the ebrake..

Mostly I would shift my gear to "P" and pull E-Brake on for last. For my last car, I don't put my E-Brake often. Becoz my Dad told me I must put E-Brake before switch the engine off. He told me to make sure the car will not roll forward or backward to other cars. Now...... put E-Brake when I am parking anywhere as habits.

first or reverse and e-brake. got a funny story as well. i live on a steep but short driveway with a flat part up top. i had my prelude (93) and the ebrake was kinda wearing out. left it in neutral, pulled the ebrake and went inside. next thing i know, my mom says "Matt, where's your car?" i was like "In the driveway." she goes "I think it is in the neighbor's yard." i look out and was just like wtf? there it was, in the neighbors acrossed the street's front yard.

Ha, those are great stories. I don't have any like that yet. I usllay leave my car in neutral and e-brake. Sometimes I forget the cars in first when I park and I take my foot off the clutch before shutting off the car. I HATE that feeling....

Reverse and the ebrake is my usual parking style. Mainly because I back into parking spaces.
Funny parking story -> A buddy of mine parked his escape crooked ricer style in 2 spaces at the apartment so he could wash it without getting other cars wet and left it in first but forgot to put the ebrake up. Later that night he went out to find that a tow truck had straightened it for him. Now we both use the ebrake, and he remembers to park his car straight.
