Aftermarket intakes lead to engine damage
Interesting article on CanadianDriver.com regarding aftermarket air intakes.
Basically they are saying that because of the higher flow characteristics of aftermarket filters, they allow a greater amount of contamination of the engine oil, which leads to premature engine damage.

the article is very interesting, but than again, the person that brought the VW probably beat the hell out of it before he broke into it. however, VWs are known to have their factory turbos overheat and replaced.

but in a world where people shouldn’t change their regular paper filters for as much as two years, failing to persistently monitor and clean one of these high performance types can lead to disaster of the kind we are documenting in this article.
Damn! When running a paper filter, I change it with every oil change. And doesn't the K&N filter say, right in the instructions, that it should only be cleaned every 10,000km/6,000miles, and that the dirt in it actually helps the filter work properly? My bet here is that this dumbass had changed over to snthetic oil, and because it says on the bottle of some oils that you can go longer between changes, that's what he did. He beat the hell out of his "modded" engine, then waited to change the oil until the extended time. A filter wouldn't cause all the damage that was listed here. If it did cause all that, how come K&N, AEM and other such companies are still in buisness? If people were told that "Uhhhh, the engine damage is because of that thar air filter", I know I'd sue the company to pay for my engine rebuild.
Simply put, the guy with the VW is a dumbass!! Straight and simple.
