Car and Driver annual thrashfest
Car and Driver annual thrashfest
Anyone see the Sept 03 issue of Car and Driver? They have the annual "thrashfest". Its a rugged series of tests, one on the street and one on the track. They're testing moded production cars. Out of the 16 cars tested, 2001 AEM/Hasport Honda Civic SEDAN (for all you sedan haters) EX type-S ranked 2nd! Not bad for our vic. Ranked over the focus, VW GTI, focus SVT, neon 2700, progress group rsx-s, jackson racing/hasport civic si, dc sports rsx-s, and madness mini cooper s. Mods they had on the civic ex sedan was of course a rsx-s engine swap, carbon fiber hood, 5zigen fno1r 17" aluminum wheels wrapped in Yokohama AVS sport tires, sparco seats, progress competition anti-roll bars and aem brake rotors with brembo four-piston front calipers. Engine work was an AEM engine-management system, a custom intake, and a Rev Hard Turbo system with 6.5 psi boost. Total cost of car after all the mods $38,322. engine= $13,472, suspension= $2000, brakes= 2600, wheels= $1600, interior= $1300. Power was 349 bhp @ 7800rpm. Torque was 239 lb-ft @ 7500rpm. 1/4 mile 14.3 secs @ 99mph. Not bad for our 4 dr vic huh?
Oh yea, #1 was HKS USA Acura RSX Type S.

thats cool and all, but am i the only one not impressed by the 1/4 mile time? 14.3 secs @ 99mph with 350HP? seems like the car should be hitting 13's, atleast i would want it to if i spent that dough on it.

wait one sec, something is very wrong with that. my friends ls1 is packing over 300 hp @ wheels, weighs over 3400 lbs, and runs high 12s. so how the hell is a 350hp civic weighing roughly 2700 lbs with driver gona only run a 14.3??? car and driver always f*cks up their track times or they must have some really sh*tty drivers.
i dun think its the driver...its the tires...yokohama avs sport?? they need to slap on some drag radials on 15" lightweight forged rims, then it'll be pulling low 13's ... i just don't see good traction when a car's runnin on 17s.
then again, i might be totally wrong, and the driver sucks ***, and can't drive properly, so put the car to waste...but still, tires will make BIG difference

They could've swapped out the gears and changed the ratio's around which would modify the 1/4 mile time a bit, also the car wasn't made for dragracing, it was made for track racing. THERE IS A DIFFERENCE.
yeh, 1/4 time does sound weird...a guy on clubrsx with just intake and hondata ran 13.8 with azenis, so i guess it must be the tires
off topic, jayfreazy: in that issue was there an article about a hytech rsx-s vd. turbo rsx-s shootout? i believe hytech said it was supposed to be in the sept. issue but i haven't gotten around to getting hte mag

A couple of points I'd loke to make.
The car will run 12s on slicks. The tires it had were street tires with a bunch of camber dialed in to make it corner. We weren't allowed to use a really good tire and we couldn't just set the car up for straight line acceleration.
The other point is, the $38K price is just for the article. I probably have less than $11K total in that car. If I had to build another and pay for stuff, I could probably do it for well under the price of a new RSX.
Our Civic Si and EX will kick everyones *** next year.

With slicks it a totally different ball game, its a FWD car, its a 4 door, and car and driver always pulls $hitty times. Also the car isn't a drag car so take it easy. O yeah and he's only running 6.5lbs of boost. You guys act like hes running like 15-20lbs of boost and hes gonna run like 12's on street tires. Take it easy
A stock GSX Eclipse runs 10lbs of boost stock, is AWD and runs 14's too......think about that.
That vic is a 4-door running less boost and is FWD and it still pulls the same time as stock GSX running more boost.
O yeah and I never believe those magazine driver 1/4 mile times
I think thats not a time to brag about but there is alot of stuff to factor in
