vtec?
Just wondering if anyone knows EXACTLY when vtec engages in our cars. I have an EX and am awaiting my SF turbo. I have been thinking about getting a dual stage boost controller but I have differing opinions of when vtec engages, I think I notice it about 4250rpm- opinions anyone????

There was just another thread on this the other day. I did the vtec indicator DIY, i have an automatic. It comes on anywhere from 2,800 to 3,300 generally. I think 4000 is a bit high.

Thanks for the responses, I know how some people think that when "vtec engages" it is like nitrous or something, just wondering specifically per Honda's specs when it does. If a V6 Accord engages @ 3500 then we should be higher than that I would think.
Finally answers... I was wondering when It kicked it. My girl has a auto EX sedan, and not once had I felt a VTEC... however in my car I can clearly feel the punch around 6500RPM and rising
The VTEC engagement point can vary based on a variety of factors - throttle position, whether the engine is warm or cold, oil pressure, etc.
With DOHC VTEC, if you're in WOT VTEC will usually engage at around 5500 rpm. I've had it engage as late as 6000 rpm, though, under less than WOT.

We don't have the standard VTEC that you see in the B series motors. See in the B series motors it switches from a normal camshaft to a more aggressive camshaft at higher engine speeds.
The VTEC we have is called VTEC-E the E stands for economy. See at low engine speeds (0 - 1500 i think) we have a camshaft that is designed to only open one intake valve. Somehow this is supposed to get better gas mileage. But once you bring the revs up a little it switches over to a normal camshaft. Thats why all these people with the VTEC indicator lights have been noticing VTEC engaging at very low engine speeds. Its not a more aggressive camshaft engaging. Its just the bitch camshaft disengaging and going to a normal camshaft.
This explanation is only for the D17A2 (Civic EX) so im not sure if this will apply to 5th and 6th gen EX. But i wouldn't doubt if it did.
actually now that you bring it up but VTEC WILL NOT engage on a cold motor, im not sure if it stays with the bitch camshaft or will the normal camshaft but there will not be a switch on a cold motor

if you have a VAFC this is bypassed, and VTEC will engage regardless of temperature.
Why is it that...
In some Honda brochures... i.e. 2k3 Civic (EX)... it says VTEC-E... but 2k2 it's SOHC VTEC. When the 2k1 came out I thought it was HX, VTEC-E and EX, SOHC VTEC or whatever.
Difference? Enlighten me.

yes it "feels" like the vtec kicks in around 4500rpms.. but that is actually the PEAK torque.... and the engagement of vtec depends on how you are from on the pedal... its anywhere from 2800rpms to 3500.. but after 3500 its always on
