Clutch. Neutral. Rev. Clutch. Gear. Accelerate.

It's dumb. It's for people who can't shift fast enough to keep it in VTEC (like it really matters.) I'm gonna assume you heard it from the Fast & the Furious - it's just tech jargon they threw in to sound smart.

Let me guess.... Fast and Furious? (jk)

Double clutching, originally, was a tecneque nessisary for older manual transmissions to shift both up and down. the reason for this was older transmissions did not have syncros yet, so in order to not grind the gears when you shifted, It was nessisary to revmatch every gear.
(My partents owned an old chevy pick up where you had to double clutch)

The process is:

1. clutch in, shift in to nutrual.
2. tap the gas (Revmatch if your down shifting)
3. clutch in, shift in to next gear.

Modern cars have syncros, so Double cluting is no longer nessisary.

I know that some people mistake Heel-toe shifting with Double clutching some times.
Heel-toe shifting is a process that allows you to use the clutch, brake and gas all at the same time, so you can down shift durring a corner (rather then before the corner)

Double clutching is a technique just used to match RPM's with speed, for instance if you get a bad launch or perhaps misshift, Double clutching is nothing more than being in gear, stomping on gas and while your accelerating push the clutch down quickly and releasing it quickly, ull jump RPMS real quick but dont think it makes you faster, b.c. it doesnt just helps you regain some trq or whatever IMO dont do it if not necessary, waste of clutch and time sometimes

Ya no big deal.. The only time I've though it helpful is if you're downshifting to the point where you're RPMs are going to jump to about 4 or 5. For instance if you're going like 30 -35mph and you want to kick it down into 2nd without going through the windshield. Then you can rev her up to about 4k or so before you let out the clutch and it'll be a little smoother.

Above statement is correct. Anyone that tells you double clutching gets you more power or "helps" you in any way is an idiot. Unless your syncro is bad it is completely useless to you. Now ask about speed shifting..I want to see what some of these goons say it is. For the record it's not just regular shifting but faster.

yeah, what is speed shifting? and I have a question about Fast and Furious... maybe it's just for the movie, but in the first one, at the very begining (as well as during the races) they show the guy flooring it in the eclipse, he takes the foot completely off the gas, presses the clutch, shifts, then completely releases the clutch, before flooring the gas again. Now... 1st, how does that not jurk the car cuz they never show the driver moving back and forth, and 2nd, how does that give you the best acceleration, wouldn't pressing the gas while releasing the clutch give you a quicker shift in the long run?
Ahh, maybe I'm picking at the movie too much, 80% of the races go through 16 gears, every other second they change gears.. like, dude, there's no more!, anyway

speed shifting is being able to change gears without useing the clutch. hard to do with a normal tranny but most full racing trannys can be done easaly.

even in racing, it has been proven that speed shifting is no faster/better then normal shifting (Im talking about road racing I dont konw about drag). aslo, its been determined that the increaced chance of damaging the transmission is not worth what little time you may save by not using the clutch.

ooooh...i always thought that was called "power shifting." i knew what that is then. id never do that tho, it totally ****s your tranny. i mean i can hit the sweet spot pretty often, but its still not every time...just doesnt seem worth it to me to speed/power shitf

Edit: to Kape: fast and the furious = movie! movies dont show realistic anything, unless its a documentary. its all glitz and glamour, especially in that movie. might be fun to watch, but dont think its an accurate depiction of actual driving techniques.

As far as double clutching, I had to do that when I owned a mustang. The second gear synchro was so bad that double-clutching was the only way to get it into gear. Neadless to say, I replaced that tranny. And as far as shifting with no clutch, I had to do that on a dirt bike when I had broken my "clutch hand" in two places.

thats not really double clutching... but i hear that technique refered to commonly as double clutching. i guess you could call it the nu-double clutching, since synchromeshing has taken care of the old problem for us. However a lot a deisels still require dbl clutching for downshift. I know i have to do it in my dads truck... but yeah, two things both called the same thing... real dbl clutching is placing the vehicle in neutral and reving, then putting it into gear.

p.s. the aforementioned nameless technique can be duplicated with some automatic transmissions. by placing the vehicle in neutral then back into drive. However some vehicles have a fuel cut-off that will engage to prevent tranny damage. ;P

Haha... I downloaded 2F2F. I watched the first part with no problem, then the second part... it was the 2nd half of X-men 2 with Japanese subtitles. So I guess I'll have to wait until the DVD comes out to see who won that tag-team race. I waited too long to see it in the theatre coz I was gone for the month of june

speed shifting-
with the pedal to the floor in a gear (holding it in gear) apply pressure to shift lever. push the clutch in and "hurl" it into your next gear, it's also called "slingshot shifting, catput shifting... etc etc" the only performance gain here is in terms of braking your syncros.

slip shifting-
slow, speed matched, clutchless shift

power shifting-
in a big v-8 you don't always shift at redline, you shift where your (gear) mutiplied torque is falling below what the next gear would give you... to pwer shift, you shift the car without removing your foot from the gas... it makes a sig. difference... if you've got a 400CI torque monster... not a civic tho

i dbl clutch personally... for me it's smoother, it reduces the wear on my trans, which takes enough abuse already (3rd one :/ ), and it's a good skill to have handy if you like to corner at high speeds...

DON'T DOUBLE CLUTCH!!! Our transmitions cant take it.
I used to double clutch on the race track, and I burned
up my synchros between 2nd and third gear. When I shifted
fast you would hear the gears grunt.

Luckily I had the honda dealership replace it all under
warrenty and they also threw in a new clutch since it
was all apart.

Your taking a risk double clutching. It only took maybe .1 to .05
seconds off my 1/4 mile time..don't do it.

Big rigs have to double clutch in order to advance to the next gear!

kjgracing: I think you meant that you were "speed shifting" at the track because there should be absolutely no reason to double clutch at the track, it will just waste your time. You shouldn't have to downshift when drag racing only upshift.

Anyways there is this one goof ball that I know. . who by the way doesn't have an engine anymore. . He mashed the gas to the floor and never let up. When he shifted, he still clutched, but never let off the gas. Inevetably he shot a rod through the side of his motor. Is there a term (besides) moron for that?
