Why do people hate Civics?
SlammedBlueEM2 took the words right out of my mouth. Why do so many people hate the L.A. Lakers? Or hated the Dallas Cowboys back when they couldn't lose? Simple, a lot of people love to hate winners, whether it's in sports, cars, life, you name it. The Honda Civic has been one of Honda's, and in it's class, most successful cars for many years, you see them everywhere. So, voila, you have a large successful group of something to hate. Not that the Civic doesn't have faults mind you, just look at the Cowboys and Lakers now in my examples above.
(Can you tell I HATE both of those teams???) So, the point is, even if the Civic was god's gift of a car to the earth with not a single fault to be found, there would STILL be plenty of people out there who couldn't stand them. Me personally, I worship mine daily....

In terms of performance, being that most people base true performance in terms of drag racing, the Civic is the most overrated car ever... yeah, this is my opinion... and this is why:
(Yes, this is Honda bashing...)
FWD
No displacement
No torque
SLOW
Wimport who's immediate purpose is burn clean air and save gas
85% of fixed up Honda are ricers
2% of them can break 10s or higher
Even the ones that hit 13s will get stomped on by any domestic that's modified and runs 13s stock.
RICE
They attract too much attention because...
Dumb teenagers drive stupid
Dumb teenagers crash them
High insurance
It takes so much money to fix it up because it's already slow. I wouldn't consider a 13 second car whether it's an S2000 or a C5 Vette "fast" more than I would quick in a wide perspective of cars that are sporty or talented going fast in a straight line
Oversized wheels
Oversized muffler(s)
Aluminum spoilers/tall wings
Underbody Neons
2 Fast 2 Furious
Decals
Blue headlight bulbs
Farty mufflers
Fake BOVs w/o turbos
Altezzas
EDIT: JDM = rice
Hondas.

Maybe part of the reason is that Honda is still somewhat in Toyota's shadow. There is a site called Corollaland and it is actually an off shoot of another site called Allpar which is dedicated to all things Chrysler. Now why would a Chrysler site start a Corolla site? They say even though they dislike Japanese cars in general, they have to admit that the Corolla is the best compact on the market. They say something like that it is much better than vastly overrated Civic, which they say has slipped to even lower quality standards in its 7th gen version. They also say that the Neon is grossly underrated.
While it may be true that the Neon is underrated in many respects, such as build quality, it still underperforms the Civic on gas mileage AND crash test ratings. Still two important factors for me to consider, especially in the compact segment.

Well, here I'll have to disagree, at least in a way, because while 99% of what you said is true, some of us DON'T CARE about any of those things. I knew my car wasn't fast before I bought, nor am I trying to make it fast, at least unless bags of money mysteriously land on my doorstep. My car has none of those "ricer" things you listed, it is 99% stock, and it will most likely stay that way. It handles quite well considering it's NOT A SPORTS/SPORTY CAR, and gets great gas mileage. Plus it looks quite nice IMO, even in stock form. So, it is far from being overrated IMO, but many of the "ricers" out there who claim they can "kick any Mustang's ***" and that their car is "fast yo" give that general impression. Sorta $#%@s things up for the rest of us non-"ricer" Civic owners.

In fact, I wouldn't dare even go there since appearance is more of an opinion and real performace is proved by facts which were some of the things I listed above.

Pretty much I agree with the big wings, and the stuff that shouldnt be on a civic. It give the rest of us a bad wrap. But on the other hand they havnt seen my co-workers 94 civic dx with a jap integra gsr engine under the hood. Some people make fun of my ride just because its a 4 door civic, but what they dont realize is that the Wrx sti, and evo 7 are both 4 doors a well! I pretty much now dont even listen to the people who disagree with fixing up a civic.
Just my 2 cents.
Jeff

I don't get why people think smaller 4 doors = heavier than a car with 2 big doors.
If I could press charges for claiming such 1st grade logic, I'd be a very wealthy individual.

i dunno about u guys, but i love my civic because its good on gas, it handles pretty damn good, its quick in traffic, its nice and plain and simple. just the way i like it. it might be slow on high end and higher speeds, but then again i only drove at an insanely high speed like 2 or 3 times of my life. so who cares. the only thing i hate about civics are their ride height. then again if i was to have any other car id still slam the sucker. i guess thats just my personal taste or preference.
I used to own a Ford F-150 and I was a die hard ford enthusiast...trucks all the way...then I went to college. I needed affordable transportation (10 MPG FORD=no good for starving college student). I wanted a NEW car, not used and the vic was the cheapest for the performance/looks. Besides all that I am a big guy (270lbs. not ALL fat, but most, lol) and the civic was the only small car that I fit in comfortably. Another reason is options. You can pretty much bolt on anything to the car to make it faster or look better for relatively cheap. I like that as opposed to the limited parts available for domestic compact cars. IMO the civic is the best buy for beginners to the racing world as well as daily driving conditions.

outa the 20 million civics that go to my school only a small handfull could be considered decent, the rest are just unlucky that they ended up with bad owners that could care less about style and true perfomance and focus all there money on $20 mufflers, 10 ft. wings and spray painted hubs. they give civics a bad rep

Couldnt say it better myself heh. People went way overboard in my area anyway (L.A.) and civics just got the whole RICE aspect associated with them. Pretty gay IMO
i'll race any of you out there who has V6 or V8 w/ my 4 cyl. civic............................................. ....... crosscountry..who ever gets from east to west first WINS... there's a $200 limit on gas..HA BEAT THAT suuuckkerssss..
I'll tell you why people hate civics.
Not because they're rice. Because everybody has different tastes, that's understandable.
Its because Honda ricer's can be the most immature, annoying, crass, obnoxious drivers. A wing doesn't hurt others (except when they think it makes their car turn on rails and crash into one), that's ok. Its the stuff they do to others that is a genuine annoyance.
When I'm sleeping at night and hear this loud buzzing muffler sound outside my window, that's annoying. When that happens, I always think to myself "stupid civic." Then to make things doubly annoying, they set off alarms with their annoyingly loud car. (Magnaflow and Tanabe's come to mind)
When I'm cruising along on the fast lane, and this riced out civic cuts me off, swerving across 4 lanes, I think "civic ricer jerk"
When I'm on the freeway and this insecure kid pulls up alongside my car trying to race me, grinning ear to ear, emitting a long monotonous fart by downshifting, that's genuinely annoying.
The kids that drive them can be hideously annoying, that's why people hate civics.
