Chevy sucks in IRL
How can people continue to buy General Motors products when they can't even get out of their own way in the IRL series??? This totally proves that Japanese engineering is miles ahead of the North American car companies efforts. Honda won today's IRL Kansas 300 and continued Japanese dominance in the Indy Car series. This is truly an embarassment to Chevrolet. GM thought that this year was going to be another cake walk since they have blown away Infinity for the last several years. Boy did they get caught with their pants down! Toyota and Honda jumped ship from CART and have absolutely blown Chevy out of the water. Most races, the Chevys do not even qualify or finish in the top 15. To make matters worse, GM has asked for Ford's (Cosworth) help!!! Desparate times indeed for the General. Just wait until Toyota enters NASCAR full time and starts to blow the doors off the Chevys and Fords there as well. LOL!
So next time some loser in a souped up Cavalier pulls up to you at a red light and wants to "go", remember the racing heritage within your Honda.

Do you honestly think that people base what vehicle they buy on how a car company places in the IRL? Wow, this has to be one of the most retarded threads to date.....

People don't necessarily use a company's placement in the standings as the ONLY guide on which car to buy, but it is a fairly good indicator of one thing. The amount of engineering that goes into a car by that company. The better a car's motor lasts, the better overall the engineering IMO. And most companies use some of the design characteristics of their racing engines on their consumer vehicles. Which again benefits the consumer. So it does help in showing how hard the engineers of a particular company work, and how much knowledge they have.

That's a good point too, sadboy. You can't just use one type of car, and one type of racing to judge how a company builds their cars. You must consider all types. Corvettes did finish 1-2 at LeMans last year, and, if you ask me, both types of racing are credible tools for judgeing a company's engineering. LeMans is a 24-hour endurance race, and IRL uses engines that rev to about 12,000rpm (I think I'm right on this). And what IRL doesn't show and LeMans does is the handleing characteristics of a particular car. IRL uses just the engines, where LeMans uses the body and structure of a particular car. So there is more to show about not only the engineering of the motor, but also the entire structure of the car, and how the two work together.
So what I'm saying is look at the BIG picture, not just one corner of it.

Ok this thread took a turn for the RETARDED really early. First of all, no one is claiming that Japanese dominance in an all-oval open-wheel racing series means that Japanese vehicles are superior to domestic vehicles.
Let's stick to the topic at hand - which is that Chevy sucks ***** this year in the Indy Racing League.
It was pretty obvious prior to the season that the Chevy IRL engines were pushing about 10 to 15 hp less than Honda or Toyota. So that's why they've struggled to finish in the Top 15 all year. Sam Hornish's 4th place finish a few weeks ago was only because: 1) it was a short track, 2) Hornish is such a great driver and 3) Panther Racing is one of the best outfits in the IRL (weak engine notwithstanding).
Chevy Racing will get their act together for the 2004 IRL season. Menard-Cheever Technologies and Ford Cosworth are burning the midnight oil to figure out how to catch up to Honda and Toyota.
I personally don't like or take delight in the fact that the Chevy engine package is so poor this year. Great racers like Sam Hornish, Sarah Fisher, Robbie Buhl, and the Lazier brothers have little to zero chance of finishing on the podium because their cars are so underpowered. Match up a top-notch team like Team Penske with the best engine in the IRL (Toyota), and it's no wonder that Gil de Ferran and Helio Castroneves finish in the Top 5 every single race.
It benefits no one to have 1/4 of the field at an extreme disadvantage. I personally find it boring as heck to watch the Chevy drivers getting lapped and/or blowing out their engines on the first five laps (like in the Indy 500).
That's why we should all root for Chevy to return with a vengeance in 2004.

Let's talk Formula 1 - the pinnacle of motorsport and the top racing series in the world. How many Formula 1 titles can GM claim? Zero. In fact, GM has never even participated in Formula 1. The Mugen Honda engine was the dominant Formula 1 engine during the early 90's.
Chevy Racing's mantra is that they're the top engine manufacturer in NASCAR. I'm not going to debate that - but does anybody outside of the United States really care? NASCAR is a tough series, but I wouldn't even consider it in the same league as F1.

A more accurate comparison between track/production would be a touring car series such as the Grand Am Cup or Speed World Challenge.
This is truly a ridiculous thread. I can't think of any off the top of my head production car using an indy engine. You can rave about honda and toyota's success in the indy market, all that says to me is they've put more resources into indy engines. I'm sorry but if I'm looking for fasr car, I don't look at indy standings.
The Hytech N/A K20A2 that produces close to 300 whp uses Chevy IRL retainer springs. Haha for real. I can imagine how hard it would be to get spare parts for that engine. The guy at the Chevy dealer parts counter would just look at you with a

Your funny. GM was already making racing cars when honda was making lawnmowers.
