Question Gas Tank Replacement

Hello everyone Happy Spring! Has anyone ever replaced a fuel tank on a 98 Coupe? I plan on replacing the fuel lines with braided steel but I also suspect a leak at the top of the tank. When I fill it , I smell gas near the rear wheel well. I did look under the backseat under the steel cover and its all dry. I do have a garage to work in but wanted to know how much of a pain it is? And any good vendors selling the tank and hardware.

Thanks

Re: Gas Tank Replacement

Not hard to do, you should probably do the straps as well
I got the straps from rockauto but I had to get the hook bolts + hardware from honda.
The tank I got used from a guy that imports them from the southern US for $150, it looked brand new.
You may want to replace the nuts that hold the filter and pump into the tank
The tanks tend to fail halfway up on the seam where they're welded together

Re: Gas Tank Replacement

Guys - I had the same smell I noticed that was only present after I filled up my tank, and it continued to smell until I ran it down about half way. I put it on my hoist and I found the seam where it is welded near the drivers side in the back by the tire has rusted and is just barely seeping gas. I see rock auto has tanks for sale, and straps as well. I will probably get a filler neck too as it is getting crusty at the bottom. Has anyone compared any of the aftermarket tanks? I see they sell 3 of them on rockauto ranging from about 130-200us $. The dorman is most expensive and typically I would say most dorman stuff is junk.

Re: Gas Tank Replacement

I used an aftermarket tank on one car and it was fine, don't remember the brand though. Spectra is a good brand, I've used them for other parts. Or get one from a southern car, I did that for the other car.

Re: Gas Tank Replacement

I bought a spectra tank, spectra filler neck, spectra straps, and OEM honda bolts. All of that together was about $350us.

I also spent another $600 on a transmission jack that I have been wanting for a year or so now that should make raising and lowering the tank super easy.

(really this was just a bad excuse to buy a new toy)

Re: Gas Tank Replacement

I found the that having the rear of the car higher than the front helped with getting the tank in and out
