Belt tension

I have a 2k civic ex coupe and I’m trying to figure how to tighten my powering steering and alternator belts. My alternator belt squeals like crazy when I first turn my car on and the power steering a little when I’m turning. I originally thought my belts needed replacement but they seem to be in pretty good shape. If anybody can tell me how to tension my belts that would be swell.

Re: Belt tension

moved to 6th gen,
loosen bolts for the power steering pump, there's a square hole in the pump bracket that fits a ratchet either 3/8 or 1/2,
use ratchet to rotate the pump to take up the slack,
hold pump in place and tighten the bolts.
should be a similar procedure for the alternator.
can always check youtube.
should probably replace the belts, they're like $10 each

Re: Belt tension

Look in service manual for belt tension deflection distances.

An old school rule of thumb is find the middle point of the longest distance of the belt between two pulleys then twist the belt 180 degrees..tension so that it reaches 180 degrees but doesn't go past.
