Replace or not.

Good morning:
I have a 06 civic w/155k mi. The only repairs I have done are tires, brakes, battery, and a new starter. Car runs good. I am taking a job where I will be traveling alot.
. My question is, Do I replace the belt, water pump, and alternator now just to be safe or when they go. I don't want to be caught at night with a problem or am I just paranoid.

Thank you:
John Madigan

Re: Replace or not.

I personally would not replace any of those until something is actually needed.....but then I do inspect regularly whenever the car is in the shop.
Inspect the belt, does it show cracks in the ribs? The EPDM rubber used to make the belt lasts a long time.

IMHO The water pumps on that engine have been damn reliable as long as the correct coolant is used. My dealer doesn't even keep those in stock because they so rarely fail.
Replace coolant using Hondas 'type 2' coolant for peace of mind, and because it's due --if it hasn't been done already (or if something other than correct fluid was used)

Alternator----installing something from a parts store could be less reliable than the original unit with 150k on it.
I'd keep the original until it's bad, unless I wanted to pay the price for a reman through Honda.

I'd tell you the alternator on my GFs 2007 Fit has a quarter million miles on it, but I don't want to jinx it.
I did however replace belts and hoses on that car at 200k JUST because the engine was already taken apart for a head gasket job and some other stuff, and the car lives 2 hours away from me. I did not replace the water pump nor alternator at that time either.
