Jury duty (sorry kinda long)
Hey guys,
I know that I haven't been around for a while, but its for a pretty good reason.
I have 3 jobs (which take up most of my time).
I also don't have 3 jobs for my health. I work that much cuz I need the money(just stating the obvious).
Well on Wednesday (10/16/02) I had to go to the Cambridge court house to do my "CIVIC" duty and serve on a jury.
Now they have a 1 day or a 1 trial system.
If you go and don't have to serve, you are free for the next 3 years.
but if you do have to serve, you have to be there for the length of the trial.
So I go and in at 7:30 AM and wait til about 11:30 to be called into a court room (along with about 120 other people).
they tell us what the trial was about and who was involved, and then they ask us a bunch of questions.
do you know anyone that is involved in the trial, any of the attorneys, etc, etc.
Then we are called one by one to talk to the judge.
The 5 people in front of me were all excused by the judge.
Then I go up, and he asks me some questions, and then tells me to sit in seat one.
so they go through the rest of the 120 people and are only able to get 15 people.
They said come back on thursday where we will pick the last juror. (12 jurors + 4 alternates)
so Thursday they pick the last person and tell us that its going to be a nice long 3 WEEK TRIAL
I was like "NNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"
So I talk to the judge and tell him that I have 3 jobs and it is super hard finding just one person to cover for me for 1 day, but I have to find 3 people to cover for 3 weeks. So he said that my jobs would deal with my loss, and to take my seat.
Just about everyone on the panel had a problem with the length of the trial, but we are all still there.
what sucks even worse.
I only get paid from one of my jobs for the first 2 days of jury duty.
the rest of the time I only get paid $50 a day. (which isn't enough) plus I gotta pay for my own parking (at least $10 a day) and then after court I have to go and work at one of my jobs.
I'm probably still gonna be working about 30 hours a week and then I'm in court for at least 30.
I'm so tired right now. and I have a cold too!
sorry just needed to vent, and letting you guys know that I'm not dead.
Talk to you all later,

Sorry to hear about it Pedro. I've only been asked once to go to jury duty and I was very lucky to not have to do anything. 3 weeks??? Damn.... That will be tough on work, but the judge is right by saying that employers CANNOT penalize (sp?) their employees because they have to attend jury duty.....
Oh and remember, the person is always guilty.... Ouch. Sounds rough. I had jury duty once. Didn't get picked to be on the jury though. Just had to go in and go out, but there was a half a days worth of waiting.
dude by law. if you submit paper work for jury duty, your work has to pay you for the time missed. because its not your fault for missing work. the state demands that you have to go. every time i have had jury duty and or a ticket work has to pay for me being out. look in to it, it may depend on where you work also..

Not only that, but there is paperwork that you can file called personal hardship, or something similar. Basically it says you can't do it, and here are my reasons...
If all else fails, drop your pants and point to your crotch saying "HE DID IT!!! IT WAS THE ONE EYED MAN! GET HIM!"
That always worked for me.

Damn, that sucks man. Yeah, see what else you can do about being compensated. If all else fails (I dont know if you would be put in contempt of court or not but) try dozing off every now and then during the trial. As long as you dont get in trouble, I'm sure they will kick you off the jury. Good luck.
