Post Considering Moving to the Boston Area

I’ve been taking steps to get away from Louisiana and I’m kind of set on moving to Boston sometime in the winter. I was hoping you natives could let me in on a little more of what Boston is about. I’m sure you have great food but what’s the culture like? What's the community like? What are some good areas to look for apartments ? How’s the job market ? Any bit of help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Edit: Zeee spelling

Hmmm... I enjoy it here.

Winters suck, snow to deal with for 5 months. If you like snow, you're all set.

Culture? Depends where you live. There's so many parts of Boston that each one is different. You can live in the ghetto, college areas, different ethnicity parts (irish, asian, etc), pretty much you-name-it.

Good areas depends on what neighborhood type you are looking for. Irregardless, it's expensive up here so be prepared.

Plenty of jobs here, although it depends on what you do for work. People make a fair amount more than other places (like the south) but the cost of living is higher too.

Oh, and people drive like a$$holes up here, so be ready. Not as bad as New Yorkers though lol. And there are more bars here than you'll ever need.

yeah living expenses are a lot more then what you are use to...but also Jobs pay better so it equals out.

I dont live in Boston, but I have friends that live in Brookline which is very nice. Its not downtown, but the T is right there.

NE in general is beautiful all year round! as much I hate winter, I really cant picture myself living somewhere that didnt have the 4 different seasons!

MOVE UP HERE!!!

whatever. a recent poll showed otherwise. RI and MA were ranked the worst. ny and nj are 3rd and 4th...so lets just be honest with ourselves here. lol

having spent 4 years in the area, wellesley/babson park to be exact, i will tell you this: if you dont live in boston, you will probably not like it. then again, i grew up in nj, right around nyc, so it was a bit of a culture shock, and i didnt have a car in college so i was kinda stuck.

as far as culture, like keith said, depends on where you are. for the most part, id say boston leans towards a european feeling town. it has that sort of "old-world" vibe to it.

you could find fun things to do, but everything closes at 2am, last call at 1am. you can get pizza or something after, but not for long. there is also not a shortage of cute girls, if you know where to look. red sox fans are a$$holes, but thats not a shocker. the pizza sucks. theres some good italian food in the north end though. in boston, rent can be steep, but if you get out into the outskirts it gets a little better. its a compromise between cheaper living vs closer to the action.

cambridge is also a good area. a bunch of stuff to do there...just a chill place to hang out.

winters suck.

i think thats boston in a nutshell. haha

ha. Red sox fans are a$$holes? that's funny. I know quite a few people around here that would argue that point.

As well as the point that every new yorker I've driven with slams on the gas, goes as fast as possible, and then slams on the brakes at the last second to stop. Every single one.

bad drivers, expensive rent/living expenses, snow... alot of it. Thats boston for yah, can't say I hate Massachusetts cause I love it here... tell you the truth I dont really know who i'd be without it. I love going to chinatown once in a while to grab some food and sometimes I like just taking the T to the south end and just walk around boston commons and such. Must say, boston is an addicting place...

boston = a bunch of college students/random people on their ipods and cellphones walking to god knows where. Thats about it in a nutshell, haha

There is no other city in the US quite like Boston. You won't find another area that is more passionate about being from their home city/state than Bostonians.

Boston is a huge melting pot. If you are not familiar with that term, it means that it is a huge collection of different cultures. Irish, Chinese, African, Italian, Thai, Indian, Native American.......you name it and you can find it here.

Cost of living? Both me and my girlfriend make less than 30k a year and we get by fairly comfortably. The higher cost of living can be overcome. We just don't live inside the city, but rather about 20 minutes outside the city and we commute to work every day. The traffic is bearable, but every once in a while it is terrible.

Art? We got it.
Sports? Red Sox & Patriots, need I say more.....
Education? Only some of the best in the country
Local scene? Yeah the bars close at 2, but chances are you can always find an afterparty or somewhere else to go.
Weather? very varied, can sometimes hit extremes at both ends of the spectrum
Wanna learn to ski or snowboard? New Hampshire's mountains are only a couple hours drive.

Anything else you want to know?

Boston is a great town, my brother lives in Brighton and has a good time. Like said earlier, it is a YOUNG city! lots of colleges and young people about. Massachussetts people aren't bad drivers, they are AGGRESSIVE drivers, meaning they will cut you off and weave in and out of traffic like they are flipping through their Ipod playlists All in all New Hampshire has Mass beat though, cheap to live and waaaay more natural beauty
