why is worcester called wormtown??

does anyone from MA knowwhy they call worcester Wormtown?? I know ive been going to school there for 3 years, but I still have no idea. Just a random though/question I have while I sit here at work.

haha yea i know, every time you guys do a DIY day at grey's Im always busy with something. once im back at school ill meet up. Im actually heading up to MA next week to the cape for 2 weeks. ill be back at school in august so hopefully then
