Tail Light Tint Wrap
Tail Light Tint Wrap
Overall I’d rate this project Worth It! It was a good price (<$20) to vastly improve on the stock look. To be fair you may need a few tries to get them right. They are a tricky tail light, but still mine came out decent and I get to try a new wrap next time with what I’ve learned.
The Results!

Here’s a video I made of the overall process (if you're more the video type):
Materials:
Vinyl tint wrap - I used Vivid Vinyl Tape
Tools:
- Heat Gun or Hair Dryer (do ask before you borrow someone's though, learned that the hard way)
- Knife
- Cloth (lint-free is best)
- Isopropyl Alcohol
- A Plastic spudger for wrap - I bought this kit
- Knifeless tape
Install Steps:
3. Use knifeless tape on cut lines (optional). This will prevent you from the inevitable situation where you cut into your lights trying to trim the edges of your wrap. Put it where the yellow lines are in the picture below.

4. Cut the wrap to length.
5. Clean the surface of the tail light with isopropyl and a cloth. Anything on the surface will make the tape not stick and may leave a quite ugly bump. I ruined a piece of tape with a few bits of dirt.
6. Lay down the tape along the top of the headlight first. I didn’t find a need to apply any heat here.

7. The best method I found was to lay the two top and side edges first with little to no heat and not much stretch, see below.

8. Next stretch the third edge by heating and stretching it into place over the back part of the lens. Next it’s time to break out that heat gun and stretch it out. Just a little heat to soften the tape a bit so it will lay nicely over the light.
I found less is moreat this stage. Heat a small section and then press it down.Take your time, once you get the knack it goes pretty quick.
9. Next wrap the film over the back side of the light and stick it down to the back of the light.
10. Cut the film so you have about ¼” or so of wrap film stuck to the back side of the light.

11. It is the same process for the top tail light.

Install Steps:
- I hate to say plan, but plan.Lay the sheet you want to use over the light and cut out at a section that gives you at least an inch or two over each edge. More is better and as you’ll see in the next step I advise wrapping around the light.
- Remove the light (optional). I found it more effective to wrap over onto the back edge of the taillight and then sandwich that down by putting the light back on the car.
