Intake -Stock to Icebox

Sorry I'm new with terminology.

I'm wondering if someone can help me understand my air intake on my stock 2000 ex. It appears the current intake pipe come down out of the box and the makes a long "u-shape" only to return up to the same elevation the box is. (Ill try posting photos if people don't know what I'm talking about exactly).

I'd like to make the hose inlet be my passenger side fog lens hole. I'll run a 2.5 inch hose to a bypass filter from a VW to a second hose attached to the stock hole in my air filter box which I'll replace with a high flowing filter. Any idea if that will work? Will it be worth the hassle and cost? About 35 buck and a couple hours I'm guessing.

Other suggestions are welcome and I'll post parts and more detail if I get response/interest.

Thought of something else. Going to buy a funnel of some sort and modify (enlarge) my fog lens hole to allow more air in. Again I'll take suggestions. Also need a mesh grill of some sort to try and keep bugs and such out. Or I'll take ideas to keep water out too but I don't plan on driving this except on nice days.

Any chance I can make it a secondary intake and get more hp? Why is the cold air better than this idea?
