Exhaust Whine

As i climb rpms in each gear, there is a short "whine" sound that i hear at about 3000rpms. It sounds like its coming from the rear. It does have aftermarket headers and exhaust. Any ideas as to what this could be?

Re: Exhaust Whine

Does it go away? Are you sure it's not just the noise the exhaust makes?

Re: Exhaust Whine

Nope, it never goes away. Its there in every gear at the same rpms. Im not for sure if it coming from the rear, but it sure sounds like it is. It sounds like a higher pitched hum. The slower i accelerate, The longer the sound is, and vice versa.

Re: Exhaust Whine

Is the whine there when you are at a cruise state?

Look for leaks in your exhaust pipe. A little soapy water in a spray bottle on connections will suffice. (it's best to use the water when you first start the car and the pipe is still cold.)

Re: Exhaust Whine

Yes it is. Say im cruising in 4th gear at 4 grand, i drop the rpms to 3 grand, it makes the sound then stops. Re accelerate, passing 3 grand, and it does it again. It does that in every gear. Its not very loud, and the exhaust sounds good, Theres just that little whine

Re: Exhaust Whine

...
are you sure it's whining?
(from several online dictionaries...)
1
a: a prolonged high-pitched cry usually expressive of distress or pain
b: a sound resembling such a cry

2: a complaint uttered with or as if with a whine
— whiny also whin·ey adjective

1. to utter a low, usually nasal, complaining cry or sound, as from uneasiness, discontent, peevishness, etc.: The puppies were whining from hunger.

2. to snivel or complain in a peevish, self-pitying way: He is always whining about his problems.

1
a: to utter a high-pitched plaintive or distressed cry
b: to make a sound similar to such a cry <the wind whined in the chimney>

2: to complain with or as if with a whine <always whining about the weather>

3: to move or proceed with the sound of a whine <the bullet whined … across the ice — Berton Roueché>

i do not remember seeing ANY exhaust whining....
and no, "basic engine performance" section is NOT for mechanical problems... it's for upgrading bolt-on parts for the engine.
