cold ai intake
cold ai intake
i have a 1999 honda civic LX (wanting/wanted an ex after i found out there was a better model) anyways, im wanting a K&N cold air intake, i already have a regular K&N air intake but im wanting a cold one, is it even possible? or so i have to deal with AEM or injen? and if i do which is a better brand?
Re: cold ai intake
after a while having my K&N it sorta gets.... blah.... (boring) if i could fit a cold air K&N i would be happier. on top of that i know K&N is the best air filter i just want cold air intake but i looked up places even the K&N store and had no cold air intake... so i might just get AEM or injen but i dont know which is a better brand

Re: cold ai intake
That's the perception, but it's not true. The extended length of the pipe actually restricts airflow and increases the temperature of the air higher through the increased amount of time it has to heat soak. If you want to upgrade your intake get a composite one, like a password jdm cf one on a plastic one.
Re: cold ai intake
so.... all in all forget getting AEM or injen? (also i found this on another site)
"the reason colder air is better for the car is this:
1) cold air is more dence, hence hot air rises cold falls.
2) this dencer air means there are more air particals per square inch (pps)
3) therefore pulling in one pound of hot air will give your engine (estimate here) 30,000 particals of oxegen to burn inside your engine.
4) pulling the same pound of cold air into the engine will give your engine upwards of 50,000 particals of oxegen to burn.
5) more oxegen = faster burning combustion in your cylenders. fire/explotions need oxegen to burn.
6) if i missed something someone say it please."

Re: cold ai intake
The affect air temperature has on performance is totally correct, but doesn't directly apply to CAI.
The air temperature is typically higher entering the throttle body on cars with a CAI than other types, because the aluminium intake tube absorbs heat and passes it onto the air travelling though it. A shorter intake tube allows for less time for heat to transfer from the hot tube into the air, resulting in lower overall temperatures. The best intakes are made of plastic to almost completely negate heat soak. Look at how Spoon offers drop in filters instead of complete intakes and how Mugen intakes are plastic, they're the best companies out there and they never produce metal intakes or CAIs.

Re: cold ai intake
thanks bomb, ill try and look up short rams (cuz on top of the K&N i have is a LONG plastic tube that... tbh i have no clue why its on there besides keeping dirt from getting in the air filter bay)
Re: cold ai intake
lso here are some brands (that i can choose from and ones that can fit my car)
weapon R
Injen
AEM
hurricane
kamikaze
mugen (too expensive for me)
and option racing

Re: cold ai intake
That all makes sense about the tube getting hot and the air getting hot because it is traveling a longer distance. But after your engine bay gets hot from the engine your short air intake will be sucking in hot air from the engine bay. Wouldn't it be better to suck in cold air from outside the engine bay even though the air has to travel further? I would think that the colder charge of air traveling further would be better then a hot one traveling a shorter distance? So a CAI that is plastic would be ideal I would think? That way the tube wouldn't get as hot and the air charge would be cold?

I haven't seen a plastic CAI, but you could make one out of plastic high temp tubing. Lots of people have made short rams out of standard plumbing pipes and they work well, so in theory a CAI could be made as well. I'm going to use this stuff to make a set of brake cooling ducts, but it could be used for an intake tube.

Re: cold ai intake
Ok, that makes sense. Thanks for the clarification MindBomber! I have a friend of mine that made a CAI out of PVC and it works great. On a cold night you can really feel it!!That stuff will be good for a brake cooling duct!! Wouldn't the perforations in it make it a bad choice for an air intake? The air would get disturbed because it's not smooth on the inside?
Re: cold ai intake
*cough cough* i know were learning wonderful stuff from bomber lol but i honest am too lazy to make home made air filters, so out of the list below i made which is the best brand to go with? (ill send a link on where i got these) my car is a 99 lx civic

Re: cold ai intake
Your not being rude.
this is the one I would get if you can find it for the LX, they only have it for the Si on this site.

Or this one.

Re: cold ai intake
I'm sorry I know this thread is about finding you a ln intake but I have a question, what are some of the best throttle bodies and intake manifolds I can get for my b18c5. Its the stockstuff now

Re: cold ai intake
You already have a $5000 engine, the stock parts are already better than many aftermarket b-series parts.

Re: cold ai intake
Sure they are, but you need to consider that there are many aftermarket b-series parts based off of the stock b18c5 parts, that's how well they perform. Making the range of parts available that will outperform stock much slimmer, more expensive and generally less effective since there's room for improvement.
