That'd be awesome. What does it take to make a fucntional one? I've never seen under the hood of a car that has a functional hood scoop (WRX, Firebird, etc.). Does it connect to an intake somehow? You could get a freaking ton of air into the engine if you designed one properly.
Or are they just used to cool the engine off? That's no fun.
Ideas?

the celica isn't one...
nor is the mustang...
some are though, I can't remember off the top of my head.
to have a functional one for the intake... I suppose ours would have to be at the side... there are some aftermarket one I've seen with them on the side, so it will ram air in the intake opening...
other than that, one in the middle doesn't really do antyhing... I suppose it will circulate the engine bay air better... but there's already openings on the front grill and etc.
It's not that useful in our cars. Because we had small engines (4 Cylinder). On a V8 application you can gain in upwards of 25hp. You can do it, all you need is a scoop and a way to attach the intake to the mouth of the scoop. You might catch some gains, but not that much... it would be better than a cold air, performance wise and you would'nt have to buy a AEM water bypass valve, but watch out for snow! It would be a nice project though... personaly I would do it. It would'nt be that hard! Good luck
Actually, it would be quite feasable to do it on our cars. The fact that the throttle body points upwards, makes it an excellent idea to have a functional scoop for race only. Just take off the air box and everything and stretch a piece of pantyhose over the TB on race day. After your finished, bolt your intake back on and you will be protected from the elements.

i was thinking a roof scoop could be functional in our cars.. especially if u have a sunroof
u could just take apart the sunroof assemebly and leave the hole and mold a scoop over it.. this would allow cool air to flow into the cabin.. and wen you dont want it you can jux slide the cover close from the inside of the car.. sorta like air condition i guess without having ur windows open

hmm. what year celica is that? or is it an aftermarket hood?
because the current generation celica's hood scoop is more for looks... I mean, it isn't block off like the mustang's... it does go into the engine bay.. but it doesn't even touch the engine or anything.. it gets rounted down to I duno. nothing? my friend and I was looking at it in his car... its in the center of the hood... it wasn't anywhere near the intake at all.

2 Cars with functional scoops that pop into my head are the WRX and the MINI Cooper S. Both have scoops that dump air right onto the intercooler (Turbo in the WRX, Supercharger in the Mini).
I see no reason why we couldn't have a functioning scoop. The stock airbox sits right under the hood, in the center, and goes straight into the throttle body, unlike some cars that have a piece of tubing that takes air from the filter to the throttle somewhere else. I should think if you cut a hole in the hood right over the airbox, and rebuilt the top of the box to close and fit flush with the hood, then you could have yourself a functioning hood scoop.

I don't have time to do it cuz I'm busy with school work right now, but it's too bad one of these companies doesn't work on something like this. I guess they're too busy making bolt on's that enhance SOUND rather than PERFORMANCE. But then again, where would the import market be without the ricers?

eh? the hood scoop is still in the center, no? how does he place the intake filter or what no in the center... the opening begins at lower right of the engine.. and makes a U turn to capture air from the front...
i dont see why u cant have a hood scoop.. u just need to borrow or mod the intake thing into something that looks like the wrx one hahaha... and just hope u dont use it when it rains..or kiss ur engine good bye
other than that u could have ram air going on!

how do u come to that answer? never heard of all-trac turbo? they have special hood that is FULLY FUCTIONAL
stay tuned folks, its been in teh works for about a year now, and it slooking more and more like its gonna get brought up to the front of my projects sooner than i hoped, its very possible to design and build, and the truth of the matter is that really the most epensive and complicated part you need is the new intake filter itself
the rest is just glass, metal piping, seals, sheet metal housing, etc etc etc.

You just need a rain filter ahead of the air filter.
