3" vs 4" exhaust?

Hey yall, I was wondering what your opinion on exhausts it. My intake I believe is a 4", but I didn't know what would be a better choice for a d17?

Re: 3" vs 4" exhaust?

Unless you're actively putting in a high boost turbo system, I wouldn't put anything bigger than 2.25" on a D17

edit: I feel I should clarify. I don't think there's anything you can do to a D17 (much less any other 4 cylinder engine) that would ever warrant a 4" exhaust system. Actually, there's hardly much, short of an aforementioned high boost (e.g. 30psi or so) turbo setup, that would warrant a 3" system on the D17. Yes, in the "new tuner" world, backpressure is the spawn of satan. Hence, why "ricers" (not that I'm calling you one; I hope I'm not coming off as a harsh *******, I'm simply trying to, for a lack of better words, teach) get the largest exhaust they can get their hands on. The reality of it is this: your engine needs backpressure to work efficiently.

That said, if you're just using your car as a daily driver with some mods on it, stick to a 2.25" exhaust system. 2.5" may even be a bit much for a stock engine. I know a lot of exhaust systems express the size in millimeters, so a 60mm (~2.36") system will do just fine. I've had a 60mm exhaust on my car since.. 2005 now, and it's more than adequate, even when I had a low boost turbo setup on my car.

Yea 3 and 4 inch is for massive boost not N/A. Bigger is not better in this case.

Does anyone even make an exhaust that large for a D17?

STI's with big turbos might run that big of a exhaust. Since turbos add restriction to the exhaust a larger pipe is needed.

I appreciate the lesson, when I ask these questions most of the time I don't know much about it so no worries. And I'm not trying to rice it out, just make it run a little better and have a little fun with it. I love working on my car even if it's the simple jobs. I don't even know what the stock size is. I wanted something that would provide better flow with adequate back pressure to pair with my gaping intake.

Stock is 1.75". For a 1.7 liter engine, that's more than an inch of pipe per liter of displacement, which is plenty. Put that in perspective, do you see a chevy truck with, say a 5.3 engine with a stock 5.5" exhaust? Performance wise, (assuming no major mods) stock size is the best IMO

Alright so say I wanna put a nice muffler on that isn't one of the big stupid ricer coffee cans, but will give me a nice sound and appropriate back pressure. What am I looking at? I saw one that was the same coffee can style but I looked like only a 3" opening instead of the fit your fist inside opening. I heard a cherry bomb glass pack on a 04 and it sounded good...as far as YouTube goes. I was wondering, what's so special about glass packs?

Re: 3" vs 4" exhaust?

Get whatever muffler sounds good to you. You don't have to worry about back pressure with a muffler.

Some good sounding ones, are Vibrant, HKS, and Magnaflow.

There is an exhaust thread somewhere that has different people's set up's. Only problem with exhaust is that everyone's definition of what defines "loud" and "quite" is different. YouTube is the best place to listen, but even then it may sound a little different depending on the mod they have.

Yeah, that's kinda the problem I am running into, you can hear them but it will probably sound different and there is no halfway install to see if it sounds good or not.

Yea, you might have to do a trial and error approach.

I have an HKS and the only reason I got it was because I got it for a great deal used, and what videos I found of it sounded good. I don't think I would have risked the retail price on it. Now that I have it I would have spent the retail money in it because I like how it sounds.

So maybe ebay is a good starting place then. Get a couple and go from there haha
