Throttle position sensors online.
I went to a mechanic today since my check engine light keeps coming on, and the car seems to having trouble changing gears. The mechanic's eyes turned into a $$ sign as soon as he saw a female customer. He checked the light with his device and told me that I need a new Throttle position sensor, and he didn't hesitate to mention that just the part will cost around $800. I knew immediately he is lying about the price. Sigh....what has a lady to do around these male mechanics to show presence of some brain cells??
I was checking online for TPS prices, and on Ebay they are about $150. How do I get genuine Honda parts, without being charged an arm and a leg extra for the price of being the wrong gender?
Any honest gentlemen out here who would like to help?
Thanks,

Re: Throttle position sensors online.
maybe the $800 is changing the whole throttle body. what about adjusting the TPS vs. changing it completely?

Re: Throttle position sensors online.
wow. get a $50 complete used throttle body on ebay, install it yourself, and call it a day (just make sure you get the correct one for your transmission type. auto and manual have different versions). actually just changing the tps sensor is a very bad idea because you will almost never get it calibrated properly. not to mention the stock tps is riveted on, the only way to remove it is break the rivets. and then you have to tap the holes for screws. its way too much work when you can get the whole throttle body for much cheaper and swap it out. takes maybe 15 minutes of your time undoing a few bolts. if you lived around the reno, NV area i would swap it for free.

Hey gear they aernt riveted on. They are security screws so if you dremel a slot in them you can easily turn them out with a flat blade screwdriver. I have calibrated 2 TPS sensors with no problem. You just need to have a GOOD DMM.

ya i forgot. heres a pic of the sensor removed off a dead one i used for parts. it has threaded holes already
this picture really helped. Now I know exactly what I'm looking for. Thank you very much.
PS. I know this is the body. I need the sensor that attaches to this.

Re: Throttle position sensors online.
just get the whole throttle body. that way the tps sensor is already installed and adjusted (altho in this pic, its missing iac valve on the bottom). but this is generally what the piece should look like.

and replacing it is pretty easy. after swapping the throttle body, preferably using a new gasket inbetween the throttle body and intake manifold (available from honda), you should reset the computer and do idle learn. after everything is installed, warm the car to operating temp. turn off the engine, then disconnect negative battery for 10 secs. put it back on, then start the car. make sure all accessories and light are off, and do not press the gas for 10 minutes. just let it idle. then shut off the car and the idle speed should be set right around 700 +/- 50 rpms.
heres a pic showing the gasket. but i still dont know what year and make of car you have. this is a sample for 2001-2005 civics
here the throttle body

and heres the gasket that goes between on top of the intake mani part #1.

Man - well, woman - I just sold my spare manual TB on EBay, with all sensors attached, for a grand total of $10 shipped. Keep your eye out for them, it's much easier to change out the whole throttle body than it is just the TPS. Either way the TB has to come off the car.
