CAI and Hydrolocking

so can water really go up the CAI in the pic? it seems too severe of an incline for water to go up.

I almost hydro locked my car. There was a huge storm and i drove through a puddle, and the car started bogging down, white smoke pooring out of the exhaust...I pulled over and reved my motor for about a minute just to burn off the water..I was really lucky.

i'm sure it is possible, not very likely, but yeah i guess it could happen. ive had my CAI for a few months now and its rained a lot and ive gone through some puddles but i havent had any problems. yeah the incline of it has to count for something and also if you realize how protected the filter is underneath it kinda makes sense that it would be harder for water to get in, there's a lot of plastic and other supports under the filter.

yea i was out under the car today lookin at what was under the filter. i saw a plastic cover that extended just alil under the filter, but i'm def. gunna get a bypass filter. now when u guys say "puddle" do you mean like 1''-4'' deep or more.

i dont know i wasnt out measuring the puddles...but i'd say no more than 3", and definitely read the forums about the bypass valve beacuse everyone says its a waste...the only way to be sure is just to drive slower in puddles

i remember at least 10 posts in the last year or two about ruined motors. bypass valve won't help unless the entire filter is underwater but then you have bigger problems to worry about. Don't risk it. And yes water can move up that pipe and fast too. Think your vacuum cleaner with 10x more suction.

when you drive over a big enough puddle that covers the whole filter. and i've heard the bypass is made of foam so after a year or two it just crumbles up.

alright thanks gearbox u saved my from spendin $40+, and possibly my car.

what i'm gunna do is keep my intake CAI on dry days, and revert it back to SRI on days that is rains. here in nc when it rains, it's wet for like 3 days then it goes back to normal. and it shouldn't take more than 10 minutes to change, so this is probably my best option. i'm about to go change it to SRI in alil bit so see how it preforms.

about the suckin in water thing- out motor is an air sucking machine. so if you have a vacuum like gearbox said, that is our motor in the simplest form. its a vacuum that sucks air. so if there is no air to suck into the ITB then it will suck in the water in its place. damn all this talk is gettin me hot lol

i'm about to go and switch it to a SRI, i'll see how it goes, if i like it more than CAI, then i'll keep it SRI. if not, i'll just switch to SRI on rainy days. thanks for your help guys.

so many people are saying bypass valves are useless... so what do we do? Do we just drive uber carefully through the rain? Completely avoid puddles if possible? what are our options?

don't get the cold air intake. the 1whp isn't worth blowing your engine.

i just changed it back to a SRI. pics in a sec.

Alright so here's what i started with.

first i removed the connecting hose thing

then i ran into a problem removing this lil fuhker. i was using a 3/8 but found out after a couple min that i needed 10mm.

When i got that screw loose, the clamp on the filter was facing the wrong direction, so it was impossible for me to unscrew it. i had to work underneath the car. (this pic was taken on moist grass, my pants look like they got **** on um)

YEA U LIL BITCH I GOT YOU OUT!

final product

tell me if u see anything wrong with what i did. advice is much appreciated.
