Maximum HP from a D17A1?
Hey guys, I'm a new civic owner (2005 value package) and I'm wondering what I can do to squeeze the most HP out of my engine, and what possibly is the highest HP possible with this engine?
I'm looking to put in cams, heads, exhaust, intake, valves, turbo, nitrous, whatever it takes.
Thanks in advance.

start with pnp head work, valves, cam, retainers, cam gear, i/h/e, but keep in mind you have to build it for what you want either na or turbo. A bolton turbo kit will net around 150whp (stock is below 100) but might not last very long.

head swap to ex engine. turbo it with pulleys i/h/e lsd and aem plug + play. around 200hp. then nitros with 50 or 75 shot. 250-275. all the stuff gearbox said would help bump the hp to 300. all together 300+

the highest any member has reached na was around 140whp. civic ex, pnp head, valve job, i/h/e, hi flow cat, cam gear, vafcII all tuned on the dyno. I can't imagine even coming close to 200whp na. there's no way.
....140 to the wheels wouldn't be slow man.
ex convo. shouldn't be too much;

the tranny limits our motors.....anything over 250whp is asking for trouble with the tranny.

yup, you guys know whats up. It can be done, but the tranny is the major problem. Nothing for them yet. Cryo treat the tranny is about the only way right now isnt it? I could be wrong, havent been online as much the last month or two. could be new parts?

anyways, k20 is overdone and im not saying uneffective but way over done. id rather take the road less taken and build the hp. more respect that way. and a 250 hp 2500 pound car sounds fast as all hell to me. lol.

if your planning to swap, youll definately love the rsx-s complete swap (k20a2). if money isnt an issue that is (which im assuming isnt since it sounds like your willing to cash yourself out on this civic). but of course, itd defeat the purpose of buying the "new" civic.
i think your best bet of getting high hp numbers is the turbo route. sorry to say, i dont think there is any way your going to get 200hp going n/a...

150 is reachable but 200 is way out of reach unless you have major money. I have never seen a 200whp n/a streetable sohc motor.
Is there any way to turn this motor into a DOHC? Or would that require a lot of rebuilding to have two cams?
Can anyone list me some parts that I'd need to get 150 out of this engine NORMALLY ASPIRATED. Exhaust, cams, whatever I need, just list them for me and maybe where I can find them for 150horsepower, and I'd be ever so grateful.
Thanks.

I have a 2004 VP. I made 111whp with I/H/E crank pulley, and no power steering belt. Not much to brag about. A little weight reduction and some practice can get you into the 15's easily, but still aint ****. N20 is the cheapest way to make a D17 faster. Dowside is you can only use it for short intermitent runs. At the same time you are not constantly stressing your motor. Like I said as far as straight line and 1/4 mile performance N20 will net you the biggest hp gain per $$$. All motor D17A1 will cost probally as much as a turbo and you might make 150hp if your lucky. K20 is bad *** but lots of money $$$$. Could buy 10 D17s and run a 75 shot on each of them till they blow for the same price. It all comes down to money and preference. If you got the money you can make anything happen.
I can't afford the price of ruining my car to put nitrous in it. I really need to find someone who can help me work with the tranmissions. I have the 5spd manual deal, but for first gear, I can barely get to 10 or 15mph before it starts to sound like the engine's gonna blow, so basically I just don't even use 1st gear, I just take off from 2nd. Are there any modifications I can make to the clutch or shifter, or the gear ratio's to make my takeoff speed more efficient, as is right now?
