serious tech/parts advice needed
Ok, so this is the first honda motor I have ever tried to build. I have had a custom exhaust built to reduce backpressure while still maintaining delta pressure as to not lose horsepower on my motor. This weekend I am picking up an injen SRI and was wondering if they make fuel injectors to replace the stock ones with a little more flow (it seems like the honda runs a little lean). I was also wondering what external parts I should add on to the motor (I.E. underdrive pulleys, cam gear, etc) to make this motor run better. I think the bottom ends in our motor are ok but have my doubts about some of the stock components. I don't want to build a race car, but I want to improve the stock motor and maximize effeciency and horsepower. I was talking to a guy whos been building honda's since the beginning of time, and he suggests head work, but only on the intake side. He said that the exhaust ports can be polished, but does not suggest porting them due to the oversized exhaust ports on hondas. Please help me! You'll have to excuse my ignorance, but I've been building muscle cars all my life. I've spent the last 2 years and about 20k on a dodge challenger thats 40% done. Oh well.

as for injectors, none for our cars yet. i'm not sure about cam gears yet but i know there are pulleys. just give it some time and there will be parts up to wazoo for our cars

Now I'de like to know a little bit about your exhaust. Delta pressure? What is that? Sounds interesting though.
For increasing horsepower I'de try:
Unorthodox Racing pullies (all three)
HP Racing one piece 4-2-1 header
high flow catalytic converter
mill the head down to increase compression
get a copper head gasket (or gasket material to make a gasket)
get an AEM fuel rail (optimizes fuel flow a little bit)
port and polish the intake and exhaust ports (if the exhaust ports are already big enough then so be it)
bore out the stock throttle body and replace the throttle plate with a bigger diameter one (someone has done this already)
I guess that's it for now. This is all within reach too right now. Maybe later we'll have an aggresive camshaft, fuel injectors, valve springs, valves, and what not. I guess you don't want any forced induction either? Just all motor buildup? That's what I'm going for. Then again, maybe a supercharger would be nice?

if you're doing a lot of custom stuff it maybe possible to use bigger injectors not specifically made for this civic. looking at some pictures they look similar but actually making them work could be difficult.
If you want to use larger fuel injectors, don't forget about a fuel pump that can put them to good use. Rumor has it from HKS that the fuel pump from an RSX will work in our cars. I believe that they have a higher capacity.

As it is, my understanding of delta pressure is the concept that the hotter exhaust gases are the faster they flow out of the tailpipe, and is vital to keeping exhaust flow in hondas. If the pipe is to large the exhaust cools down and compresses therefore not flowing out of the pipe as easily. As far as the fuel pump I am already running into problems with my intake. I just put it on and at the high RPM's I can already tell the fuel is not only starting to cut out, but it is very uneven. Looks like I'll need a fuel pressure regulator, fuel rail, and a fuel pump....doah!

Seriously? You can tell that it's cutting out with only the intake and exhaust? Whoa! Maybe I should think about getting that RSX fuel pump that is rumored to work in our cars? I'm expecting an AEM CAI soon.
As for the delta pressure I think I know what you mean. Too much cooling of the exhaust gases and they tend to flow more slowly. Smaller diameter does the job, but what do you think of header wrap? That should also help, right?
AEM fuel rail is listed on their site (www.aempower.com). I haven't seen it for sale anywhere yet though. Some people say it's not out yet. In any case, I plan on getting that too. It should be constructed a little better and might even increase the fuel pressure by being less restrictive than the stock unit.
Answer me this though, why a fuel pressure regulator? I know that you can regulate the amount of fuel pressure from 0 all the way up to the maximum amount that the fuel pump is capable of. That's all I know though. If you get a fuel pump that is rated at a higher pressure than stock, do you have to regulate it? Won't the injectors regulate themselves? Are they just timed to open and close and they don't care how much fuel they atomize? If that's true, then do you need better injectors? Can the stock injectors handle a little bit more fuel pressure?

The reason I want a fuel pressure regulator is because even if the injectors were to regulate the fuel to a certain point, it can still overload the head and cylinders and cause unburned fuel causing a black cloud out the tail pipe, plus if the fuel pressure is kept the same I was told it would flow better through the fuel rail...? I had the problem with the black cloud on another civic I was working on, and the fuel pressure regulator solved it.

Ah, okay. Good to know. Then the injectors only regulate the flow to a certain extent. Could we use the fuel pressure regulator made by AEM for other previous generations of Civics? Why do they have to be so specific? Do they just make custom mounting points or what? Do you know?
